Default My car sucked up water through intake!!

It was raining and I didn't have a chance to put the cold air intake by the engine bay. It sucked up water and died. My mechanic told me the next day to take out the spark plugs, unhook the intake pipe from the throtle body and turn the key to see if the pistons would push the water out. I did it and I could hear the engine cranking. Dried out the spark plugs and throtle body, put them back and was able to start the car. It had a constant and very lout "ticking" noise that seemed to come from the head, probably the valves. I turned off the car and started it again, still the same noise but after a while I didn't hear it that much, I thought I had it made when I heard like something broke or bent inside the engine. The problem is I don't know what part might have gotten damaged or broken, you guys have any idea??? The car didn't start after that, no cranking noise either.

Should have called it quits when it would even turn over. Now somethings really f*cked. Chances are its bent valves and now something worse. Don't crank it anymore. Let the poor thing die with dignity

sorry about your luck. When you hydrolock your engine chances are its time for a rebuild

that was almost certainly a rod. most likely just the one cylinder that was on its compression stroke.

your valves are probably fine, they were closed in that cylinder anyway.

live and learn.

What you should of done where these steps

-pull the plugs
-Drain the oil and filter then put new oil in
-Turn the motor by hand by turning the crank pulley
-Watch for water to shoot out
-Put new plugs in
-Then try and crank it

If now that your car won't start back up, it's cause you still had water mixed with your oil which probably cause your rod to break. Look around under your motor, backside, everywhere pretty much to see if there are any holes in the block where a rod may have shot through

Been There done that. My bet is also bent rod. You need to do a compression check on it. If for some reason it is a valve that will show it. But I'm betting bent rod. Thats what happened to mine about 8 months ago.

so that means my block is messed up too? It was a dumb thing to drive that car like that in the rain. I'm towing my car to the mechanic shop this week. I better start looking for those rods. Do any of you have any for sale, are the ones from the H22 the same? I got an H23

h22 rods are shorter.

i'd bet that the damage is limited to just the one cylinder that was trying to compress that water. you can replace that one, but a set would be better.

So, I hate to be the barer of bad news but this is what happens when your cold air becomes submerged at 800rpm (idle):

All four bent beyond repair. Pistons-irrepairable as well.

And this is what happens to the block.

Sorry Guy. Maybe your luck will be better than mine but if you were at anything higher than 800rpm I doubt it.

The good news is, your head should be in perfect condition. Maybe even a little cleaner than before.

yeah... why are they in the fridge?

i think what he's trying to tell us is that if your car gets submerged at 800rpm, your pistons and rods jump out of the block, bend themselves a bit, and run like hell to get the prime real estate in the fridge on the top shelf next to the swiss valley 2% reduced fat milk.

i'll keep that in mind next time it's raining.

j/k... haha... those rods don't look pretty.

You seriously bumped a five year old thread to ask that?

He was probably cooling them to press the wrist pins out and re-use the pistons, but the freezer would work better.

So I guess I'm fucked right? I tried to drained the oil after my car sucked water and shut down at about 5 pm... Tried to drained after towing it today at about 10pm and the oil pan is broken... I didn't even checked anything else!! What do you guys think??😔

If something broke and went through the pan, time for a new engine.

And avoid puddles if you have a cold air intake!

I live in the NW and get rain 9 months a year... These are a MUST for anyone with a true cold air set up! $25 V.S. $2500+ for new engine.... At least offers enough time and protection to safely kill engine if you have no choice but to hit deep water....

Hopefully you coast through the deep puddle after you killed the engine. If not you can pop the hood, disconnect and run strait off of the TB to get out of said puddle.

ive sucked up water twice with my d16y8 all my car did was just sputter and misfire bad and run like **** for about 15 or 20 mins the check engine light would flash then stay steady but it only threw codes for misfires on all four cylenders so i just changed the oil and filter asap and its been fine ever since. even though y8's are cheap my motor only had 85k on it.

I still don't get how people manage to hydrolock engines. I have a true cai and customized it with a removable plate so when it rains I put it on and I'm gold. But I'm in CA. We don't worry about rain anymore. Or having water

I get being run off the road or an emergency. But it seems like it happens more than it should
