Default jerky acceleration

97 prelude base
AEM intake, greddy exhaust

I get jerky acceleration/loss of power every once in a while, seems to happen only on a cold engine/cooler days. Almost a choking/struggling feeling. Only happens for a minute or 2 after startup. Any ideas? EGR?

how long has it been since you changed the fuel filter?

I've owned the car for 2 weeks...i don't know when it was last changed. Probably a good place to start?

i would do that and spark plugs/wires. Might as well change the oil and oil filter along with a distributor cap and rotor.

that just me tho. Would rather change it all now and know everything is new.

I was going to replace the fuel filter for my 97 base as well as I was getting something similar occasionally, but I was told that Fram filters suck and I should stick with the OEM parts. Is there a difference?

are you letting the car get to operating temp? vtec wont work unless its warmed up.... just a thought.

bumping this back up.

I replaced the air filter, fuel filter, plugs, wires, distrib cap/rotor...all with top quality stuff.

Still seem to have the same problem. Temp doesn't seem to matter as i originally thought and it happens out of vtec. Still get a choking/struggling feeling that lasts sometimes a couple seconds and sometimes a minute or 2. Not sure what my next step should be.

Fuel pressure regulator or fuel pump?
Collapsed or collapsing fuel line.

does it happen between 2500 and 3k revs? if so it might be the EGR or EGR manifold that is blocked a bit. that is what was wrong with my 97. had it cleaned out and prob gone.

its manual.

it does seem to happen at lower rpms...after the initial struggling it will then "launch" or lurch/kick ahead to normal acceleration. I've read up on EGR and it seems to have the right symptoms.

thats funny i have the same exact set up. AEM + Greddy exhuast and sometimes I feel it choking as well. i'm going to to do a major tune up this saturday. replace all belts, spark plugs, fluids, waterpump, thermostat, etc.

My car is a 92 vtec and it feels very choky at times too. I believe the stock exhaust has some kinda restriction. Can't wait to change it. Is your exhaust stock as well?
