JDM H22 now no spark
Hi Guys, I am doing my nephew a favor here...He has a 93' Prelude H22, he blew the motor up (badly!) Anyways...I got a hold of one of these JDM H22 motors.
This was a longblock with a brand new cometic HG & ARP studs, I bolted all components to the longblock...popped it in the car and it started immediately which was wonderful! Now....here's where it gets ugly, the cometic began seeping oil within 5 minutes...long story short, install was done incorrect...waaay over torqued.
I then put an OEM Honda HG on, torqued/sequenced up to 80 FT/LBS...now no spark at all. The small ground strap on passenger side is on and tight, crankshaft is right on the money (timing wise), verified TDC w/ a screwdriver in the #1 piston....locked the cams w/ a 5mm allen key, I dont think I can get this timing any more perfect! The coil is getting power, the wires going to the IDM are getting power as per the factory manual....it is pointing me to an IDM however I am having a very hard time believing the IDM failed between a HG change.
I moved the distributor around to see if any change...no go. The distributor looks fine and clean, no oil seepage. I do NOT smell fuel in the cylinders however I am assuming this is because it isn't sparking....so no fuel delivery?!?
Any logical sugg's would be appreciated, I am at a loss right now. I keep fighting with a timing issue as this is the only thing that was truely disturbed however everything is lining up as it should be and as it did originally when the car started up instantly.

Re: JDM H22 now no spark
Update...relay under dash is working, swapped IDM & coil...no change.
I REALLY NEED HELP, if their is anyone local to 19067 zip that knows what their doing I will pay. I am at my wits end w/ this nightmare. PLEASE throw me an idea here, not sure what I could possibly be missing.

There is a ground on the harness that needs to be hooked up to the thermostat housing for the injectors, its easy to miss when you're putting things back together.

I think you should get fuel wether it has spark or not, if you think its the ecu try another ecu see if that works. But as mentioned above check your grounds

No fuel, check to see if the fuel pump is priming. Easiest way is to take gas cap off and listen for the hummmmmm while someone else turns the key. Secondly I would check the ecu. Open it up and look for any burns or discoloration inside. Unfortunately the ecu was my problem on my vehicle.

Did you check the ECU fuse?
You can prime a Honda without an ECU, but the ECU tells the injectors when to fire, so you won't get fuel if the ECU isn't hooked up.

The pump is working.. I disconnected the return line and theirs plenty of fuel. As for compression, it's around 150/average however that's a cold engine and dry so it should start I would think...Do these motors somehow sense compression?
I checked all the ECU fuses...their fine. The "backup" fuse was blown however and I replaced that...it is tied to the ECM. I am now leaning towards ECM, I can't think of many other things it could be honestly. Thanks guys for the sugg's.

Im wondering which injectors you used. If you used h22a4 injectors I'm wondering if the high impedance could be the issue which could have burned the board of the ecu though it could be visa versa that would be the problem.

GOOD UPDATE!
To all that tried to help me..Thank You, I'm a car guy albeit not a Honda guy but that doesn't matter... a car guy is a car guy. Wanted to share what my solution was to help others in the future as so many don't do ( i hate that!).
So in a nutshell, I had a 2.2 JDM VTEC OBD-1...had no spark or fuel to the injectors. the timing was dead-on, the distributor (Dizzy...right??) had power, coil had power. I replaced the IDM, main relay was fine......I noticed the "backup" fuse under the dash was blown. Replaced it, cranked.......blew. What does the "backup" fuse control? : ECM, Injector Resistor Box, Idle Air Control Valve, and the O2 sensor via the Main Relay.
At the end of the day.....the O2 wires ( the 2 black ones that "make no difference how their hooked up" I read on different forums caused the "backup" fuse to continually blow and cause a no spark/fuel condition in this H22. I disconeccted the O2 temporarily and it started up in 2 seconds. Hope this helps someone else out down the road and thanks for all the sugg's Honda guys ........Now back to my old-school Buick Grand National!
