Default help! my h22 cuts out at high revs

Hi this is my first post but I've read threads here for awhile. I swapped a h22a into my 93 lude that originally had a h22a1. I've put about 600 miles on it since the swap, and hadn't had any big problems with it until last night. I hit vtec in 1st gear and all the sudden the motor cut out big time, and so did the electronics like the radio reset and the gas and temp gauges flashed off then back on. I pulled over and it didn't die or anything, it was still idling just fine, I got out and inspected the motor and it wasn't leaking anything, so I drove away. It still drives completely fine until I floor it and get into the higher rpm range, and it does it mostly in 1st gear, not nearly as much as in 2nd. It only does it sometimes too. I had a friend ride with me to try and show him what the problem was and I hit vtec probably 10 times without it cutting out once. Sometimes when it did cut out in first after i shifted to 2nd vtec wouldn't engage, but when I shifted to third it would engage. Then if I shifted back to first or second it would work again. Also it seemed like the speedometer would go a little crazy when shifting from first to second, it would bounce around or go to zero.

I do have a check engine light but its only code 41, which is because i don't have an o2 sensor, so basically I am at a loss as to what could be causing this problem. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

well, i would resolve your o2 sensor issue and not beat on your engine when it is not in proper working order. i have found that in a lot of cases your check engine light is not on because your car is running poorly, but that your car is running poorly because your mil is on, it puts the car in "limp mode". also with obd1 cars diagnosis is a lot more vague, once you resolve that issue you may uncover another one.

other things to check : ignition, electrical grounding, fuel and spark

thanks for your reply. i don't think the o2 sensor has anything to do with the problem i'm having, seeing as i haven't had one for awhile and this problem only came up recently. the motor still runs as good as it did before, it just cuts out only when at wot and high revs, and it doesn't always do it.

Hey nathan i know that this post is 3 years late, but i came across it, and I believe that it is the ignition switch bro. There is a recall on that switch for all 97-99 preludes and some 00-01 cars as well. its not your motor, its the ignition switch where the key is. Assuming you have/had that H in a prelude, then that is your problem. Did it just click off or like slowly lose rpm's and shut off? if it is the former, then its the ignition. Take it to Honda.
