Harmonic balancer Fell off, HELP!!!!?????
yeah so im driving down the road cruisin at about 50, and i hear a clickity clack, and my power steering goes out, and my battery light comes on, Then a little afterwards, my car shuts down. My harmonic balancer, mysterious, disapeared, and nothing left bolt the bolt.
Any one ever had this happen. the car is a 99 SH

i'm guessing you are talking about your crank pulley? my only guess is that it was cracked, and broke int more than 2 pieces because if the bolt was still there... was the washer on it? did you recently do any work in that area of the car?

i had a a new clutch flywheel replaced at honda, about a month ago, and a atts sensor, but no work to the crank pulley, it was stock from factory, and just went over the factory 100k warrenty 1k miles ago.

Haha funny you post this as My Main crank pully (Harmonic Balancer), just came off my 95 H22A motor last week. Basiclly the same situation. As for the cause....It is unknown. Those bolts are torque'd down with some EXTREME pressure.. But yea while you will probablly have to get new belts might aswell get the AEM pully's to go with it....

Re: (biggjimmy7)
My balancer on my 94 h22 did something similar, the rubber insulator between the inner and outer halves split, the pulley moved in and was rubbing through my timing cover, i didn't catch it until my #1 main bearing started flaking apart, very close to a spun main.

Re: (biggjimmy7)
if the crank pulley falls off, it has nothing to do with the timing belt. The crank pully powers the AC, Alternator, and PS ONLY. Timing is on its own deal. So if the pull did in fact come off, no valve damage, just a toasted battery till you get the alternator belt etc back on.

correct as long as the keyway didnt back out of the lower timing sprocket.
believe it or not this is somewhat of a common occurance on h series motors. they see it at the dealer sometimes, but more commonly in performance shops where the pulley was removed and never retourqed properly. crank pulley bolt should be tourqed 110 ft lbs. if i remember correctly. most cheap impact guns, especially 3/8 drive will not provide this tq. it needs to be done w/ a good 1/2" drive gun w/ a good air supply (compressor). alot of shops make the mistake of using snapon guns w/ small compressors. this is no good because snapon impact guns require ample air supply as they use alot more air faster than say matco impact guns.

btw, we dont have a harmonic balancer. </TD></TR></TABLE>
harmonic balancer, or dampner, wichever you want to call it...we do have one. most internal comustion engines do. they are required to remove harmful engine harmonics (vibrations) which ALL internal combustion engines have. the factory honda harmonic dampner is a great unit from the factory and you will almost never need to worry about upgrading to an aftermarket unit such as ati or fluidampr. for those of you interested in learning more about engine harmonics and crank twist check out http://www.fluidampr.com. ati also has a great website as well. there have also been plenty of threads in the drag forum that you can search for as well w/ great info from pro racers and engine builders.
if the rubber ring in your factory pulley is starting to dryrot or crack, or if the pulley has any chips out of it or cracks in it, then you should consider buying a new one. $90. cost from honda. whatever you do....stay away from cheap power pulleys such as UR(unorthodox racing). if its not a dampner you dont want it on your engine BELIEVE ME. people will say... oh but i have use the ur pulley for a while now w/ no problems. what you dont hear about are the people that have bone stock h22s w/ only intake and exhausts and a UR pulley that lose oil pressure come to find out it is because there oil pump gear has broken resulting from vibration that wasnt absorbed (dampened) in the crank pulley as it should have been. you may get lucky for a while, even a couple years w/ a ur pulley on a mildly modified motor. but all it takes is the wrong frequency held for a couple seconds from just the right rpm. its not worth the 1-2 whp that you MAY gain from it. and yes i have swaped them on the dyno before, and yes i have seen these horror stories w/ my own eyes. i have had to rebuild h22s due to broken oil pump gears resulting from UR pulleys. keep it stock or spend $400. on an ATI unit if you have a drasticaly changed your motors internals(making 250+whp w/ aftermarket parts).
sorry for the long post, it has been debated many times and there is so much correct info and facts out there outside of h-t you just have to know where to look. but if you disagree w/ me than i would suggest posting a thread in the drag forum asking if honda motors have/need a harmonic dampner. there are plenty of professional engine builders that can vouch for it
