Default H22A4 Shredded timing belt

I recently replaced a timing belt and water pump. A week later my car died and I looked at the timing belt and it was shredded with only about a 1cm of belt left. What would cause the timing belt to shred like that?

installed improperly, bad, broken or loose idler/tensioners, loose bolts. im sure once u tear into it you will find the cause easily

i had the same issue when i first got my 93. the person i got if from said he would do the service if i would make the trip to his house to get it, about a 4 hour drive. 2 days after i got back home, on the way to work it died about 5 houses down from mine. i push it back and pop the valve cover and i find the same thing. the tenchner that works both belts wasnt tight and allowed the balance shaft belt to rub the timing belt. you need to do a leak down test b4 you tear it apart and see if you have any bent valves.

Oh, he's got bent valves. Count on it. All of our motors are interference motors. It's just a matter of how many are bent and how badly.

The belt was still intact do you guys still think the valves could be bent? I'll take a look at it asap to see if anything came loose. I haven't had any time to take a good look at the car.

If it didn't break, then you may not have any damage. Only way to know for sure is to tear it down, check to make sure that everything remained in time, even though the belt is shredded. If everything is still in time, put a new belt on it, make sure the tentioner bolts are tight, and rock it, mang.

discovered the cause of the problem. the head of a bolt for the timing belt tensioner broke allowing the tensioner pulley to move up and down loosening the belt. i have circled the bolt that broke off.

after realizing that part of the bolt was still in the block i decided to go with a manual tensioner conversion. after buying all the parts and trying to install the tensioner i ran into another problem. there is no hole for the base bolt to go on noted in the pictures below.

would it be okay if i installed the tensioner without the base bolt?

there is a hole there. as you can see in the pic the hole is on the oil pump not the block.

if you do not have the arm that extends out with the threaded hole then it is likely broken and if its broken you will have to get a new oil pump.
