Re: h22 tranny 5th gear grind and no reverse (92jdmh22eg)
The teeth on the 5th gear synchro are mushrooming out which won't allow you to put in into 5th or revearse. Sometimes it gets better for a little while and you get use of these gears back but it will need to be replaced to fix the problem.

If I try this method, is there any way i can find out without putting the motor on the car? Reason i ask is because my Reverse no longer works and i had to replace the tranny. I have the tranny just sitting and i've recently pulled out my motor. If i put the H22 tranny back on the motor without putting it in the car, again is there any way to find out if it goes into reverse without the motor in the car?

My reverse is starting to go out, 1/2 the times to get it in gear I have to go through 1-5 then put it in reverse or I have to put it as far as it can in reverse then release the clutch slowly while pulling the shifter in reverse slightly and it'll pop in gear with no grinding.

lol that's a lot of trouble just to get it into reverse. i use to just park in an area with no cars in front of me so i can just take off. sometimes i'd get unlucky and someone decides to park in front of me so i have to push the car in reverse.

Re: h22 tranny 5th gear grind and no reverse
Same issue on a 92prelude h22a.
I tried a few different mechanical things with no results.
Edit: I pulled the interior console and checked the shifter bushings and alignment or to see if some pocket change was stuck in there.
Next I disconnected the shifter cables and could get reverse on the stick so I tried to get it into reverse manually. No effect.
I don't believe it but flushing the tranny fluid and replacing with napa synchro tech (didn't have GM and honestly thought I was dropping the tranny out to rebuild so w/e) fixed it! ...for now...
Not right way though, it took a few days with short drives treating the tranny a little gentle into 3rd and 5th, trying reverse periodically. I was gaining a little more movement in the stick everyday but was still pushing her down the driveway. Then noticed I was getting my back up light one day but still no reverse. Tonight I took a short drive and pop! Reverse! I had to hold it in gear but I had it. By the time I got home I could just drop it in and it stayed. No problem.
If I can get another few months out of it I'll be stoked.
I think the key here is regular fluid changes aaand try not to bounce the stick off the taint area tween 3 and 5...

Re: h22 tranny 5th gear grind and no reverse
I had the same thing happen to an m2a4 transmission guys. I tried everything. It is a total waste of time if it is that far gone. Don't waste your time and efforts on the fluid. It is the 5th/reverse synchro sleeve. The gears mash and it flattens all of the ends which do not allow the sleeve to slide. It feels like a wall. I finally just sucked it up and tore it out and replaced the sleeve for 100 dollars. First time I have done it, turned out to be easier and I actually had less time into it then I did messing with it and going without reverse for months.

Re: h22 tranny 5th gear grind and no reverse
There was a TSB out on this for a bunch of transmission, at least the 5th gear grind. The 5th gear shift fork was bad from the factory and should be replaced along with the synchro and sleeve (at minimum). I decided to forego a new gear assembly and lightly dremeled the teeth to get them sharp again and it's working well, but a new gear is the right way to do it.

I still have reverse after a few days of driving... Some aggressive some not. I can't stop in reverse with the shifter in gear or I need to double clutch to get it out, that usually results in a stall. Smooooth. Better to pull out before you finish, like I always tell my sons....
I've just ordered some energy suspension motor mount inserts ($30) and I hope this will help keep things in alignment and alleviate some un needed wear until I can get a new tranny or decide to start un bolting stuff and drop mine.
Just wanna make my self clear, albeit half assed it did work and for the 60 bux in fluid and 30 min time to pull the tire and drain the tranny I feel it was worth finding out.

Re: h22 tranny 5th gear grind and no reverse
For sure. For some people it may be different. All of the symptoms are slightly different. I have had it happen in two of the h trans. I had reverse work periodically in an m2f4 usdm obd1 prelude trans. 5th would grind and pop out and reverse would work 25% of the time. I messed with it and messed with it. Never got it working right. Then when it happened to my m2a4 I was determined to fix it. That trans shifted better then any h trans I have owned. 5th gear worked like butter but simply NO reverse. Not for 2 months. I finally pulled it, spent 100 bucks on the 5th/reverse sleeve and it works great.
Good luck either way. Just so you know though once you take that trans apart you will realize how easy it is. I was intimidated at first but quickly built confidence. Its easy.
