h22 to h23 tensioner... should I?
Is it still worth it to get the h23 manual tensioner, or will I be safe with getting the h22 kit from prospeedonline? Reason I ask is that I am getting a JDM h22 and am going to replace the timing belt before I put the engine in. I was wondering if I should just keep going with an h22 auto tensioner, or do the conversion.
If you suggestion the conversion what parts do I need... from what I read I basically need to order everything from this writeup:
http://www.collectiveracing.ne...=1093
Which is listed as:
13404-PT0-004 - ADJUSTER COMP., BALANCER BELT
13415-PT0-000 - BRACKET, BALANCER BELT ADJUSTER
14510-PT0-004 - ADJUSTER COMP., TIMING BELT
14516-PT2-000 - SPRING COMP., TIMING BELT ADJUSTER
14521-P14-A00 - PLATE, ADJUSTER
90014-P14-A00 - BOLT, TIMING BELT ADJUSTER BASE
90015-PT0-000 - BOLT, TIMING BELT ADJUSTER SPRING
90016-PT0-000 - BOLT, TIMING BELT ADJUSTER
90140-P14-A00 - WASHER, PLAIN (11MM)
For those who can't read it.
What other parts should I get for replacing the timing belt in addition to this mod? Should I get the H23 timing belt kit from prostreetonline, or does that include more than I need? Should I not order some of the parts listed above because prostreet includes them? Or should I just go ahead and get the timing belt and water pump from majestic? Also would I get an h22 water pump and timing belt or get the h23 parts?
Thanks for all your help!

Yes its worth it my friend broke his auto tensioner 3 times and honda didnt cover it till the 3rd time. He was pissed he had the Greddy timing and balancer belt and he just threw it away the first time it happened because the tech said the timing belt was stretched. When it happend the 3rd time I searched on H-T and thats when I came across the manual tensioner conversion and he did the conversion. Honda installed it and it runs fine. Im next, need to get it done on mine.

for sure change it out, the manual tensioner has been absolutely solid for me. my auto tensioner broke about a year ago, it had a rattling sound about a week before the auto went out on me. it's 200% worth it to put it in for peace of mind.

the auto tensioner failing on a stock or mildly built motor is pretty rare, common misconception, unless you are running aftermarket cams, higher than stock compression, boost, or you milled the head, the auto is fine, but if u want peace of mind go for it, its like $100 to do...but that kit from prostreet is way too expensive, u dont need a new auto tensioner, just order from hondaautomotiveparts.com and u'll be set for half the price

like phryxis said there was rattling and kinda like a tapping sound coming from that area. He has a built head and forgot to add the first time it happend when honda replaced the auto tensioner they torqued down his cam gears(Skunk2) too tight and they slipped. I think thats what could have caused it to go bad the 2nd time. He called Skunk2 and they said that if you torque them too tight they will slip.

Not true, my auto tensioner failed with basic bolt on's. Switched to the manual tensioner while doing the rebuild of the block and head work.

Not to mention he said that this occurrence was rare which is not true. Do a simple search and see all of the tensioner failure threads.

This is correct. It is actually very common in the 5th gen ludes there is a kit that honda makes with a new tensioner and t-belt. I have seen the kit with the new tensioner go badd also on bone stock cars. I've done well over 20 in the last year so I would say that is classified as more then rare and that is just my dealership

Re: h22 to h23 tensioner... should I? (phryxis)
Thanks for all the feedback!
I'll just get what I need from the majestic/hondaautomotiveparts site. What else do I need in addition to that list the mod specificed (i am getting a JDM h22 so want to change the TB before I put the engine in).
Do I just need a timing belt, water pump and balancer belt? I'm assuming I would buy all these for the h22 engine right?
Sorry to be annoying with all my questions, I just want to double check and make sure so I only have to order this stuff once ; )

Re: h22 to h23 tensioner... should I? (h8trix)
yes, you are right with everything you need.. Btw, add me to that list x9.... Mine failed on my jdm h22 300 miles after install... Ive replaced a total of 9 with manual tensioners so far... Thats just in my car club... # of them bent valves before they caught it, so be safe... Just do it... I can do it in 45 minutes now or less...

Yes me too!
Next time, try looping a long strip-tie between the tensioner arm slot and the anti-roll bar below. Just tighten the loop and the tensioner arm will be held at its full travel. This makes slipping the belt onto the cam gears much easier.
Just cut the strip-tie off, when done.
