Everyone who runs an H22, but is using a different ECU....Check-in Here
I'm trying to figure out how the H22 runs with a non-P13 ecu....meaning P72 (GSR), P28 (Civic EX), or P30 (Del Sol VTEC).
I have an all-motor build going and I'm trying to decide which ECU will allow my engine to run the best and most reliable with Hondata. This is my Daily Driver, so I need reliability, which makes the P28 seem somewhat scarey due to having no knock sensor and detonation can happen even with a perfectly tuned engine on pump gas.
Then again, the P72 and P30 do run a knock sensor, BUT they are tuned to pickup the knock from a B18C1 or B16A2 engine, not an H22A. So does this "good" feature become inaccurate when trying to detect H22 engine knock?
What experiences do you guys have, good and bad, with running either of these ECU's? Do you use a knock sensor? Is it working well or bad for you? What would you recommend for me?

im runnign a p08 jdm 1.5 liter vtec ecu ...it doesnt read egr knock and is a 1 wire o2 signal(so no more heated o2) it works great and felt a huge increas in bottom end power due to the no knock sensor......

a knock sensor is a knock sensor...they do the same thing! there is not diff from a b16 knocking to an h22 knocking....with a daily driven h22 you will be fine on pump gas and will get no det. unless you have some crazy high comp set up or the engine is really out of tune...

Well, here's my bottom end setup:
-JDM Type-S pistons (11:1)
-Milled Head (not done yet, tbd)
-Stock shotpeened Rods w/ custom ARP bolts
I haven't decided on how much I'll mill the head based on clearances and how much compression I'll feels safe with on 92 octane pump gas. But it will be LESS than 12:1. Detonation can still occur even with a well tuned motor.....bad gas, different engine load (up a steep long hill), different elevation levels, etc.

I'd go with the knock sensor. I don't think there's a difference between any model. It "hears" the knock and retards timing. Not a bad safety feature. The other models P72 etc.... also have an option for the IAB's and allows you work those. I think you're thinking too hard about it. I've heard of good things about using the knock sensors to help tune. (Hondata)

Oh, I forgot to mention, I will be using the Euro-R intake manifold, so IAB's don't matter. Thanks for your response. Keep em comin guys

I have been told by a few people now that an s200 has an aux port that will control the iab, so the knock sensor is all you will lose....if you tune it right you wont need the knock...

But if you are running a Hondata just get a p28. If you can't tune the car with hondata well enough that you're worried about knock you've got other issues (tuning issues).

It senses for detonation (pre-ignition), which can destroy your motor slowly or quickly.

with you guys running p28's - i understand an obd1 changeover is required? how did you do this? does a regular ol' conversion harness do the trick?

with you guys running p28's - i understand an obd1 changeover is required? is this as simple as buying an obd1 harness and an obd1 ecu? does a regular ol' conversion harness do the trick?
also, if i were to chip the p28 and obtain one of thes harnesses, is there a place in the midwest that could tune a hondata s100 or s200? on hondata.com, the didn't have any midwestern places that could do it, but is it something that basically an old rice shop with a dynojet could do? of course i would go to something better, but is it as simple as that?
also, are all p28s the same? i see them for several different cars, but are they all the same, except for the different fuel maps for the different cars?

I'm pretty sure that you would need an obdII>I converter if your car is a 96+ (OBDII). I believe skunk makes one. As simply as buying it and plugging it in.
As far as getting hondata tunned, I would go with Hondata specifically, and not some jo-schmo. You could always mail it to a shop that isn't close by that has a good rep. thanks for the verification of info, mattmw88. i sent out a bunch of offers today on some p28's and am in search of a nice conversion harness - ive seen a few going for 100 bucks
ill try not to forget to let you know what i end up doing. ill bet a whole bunch of junkyards back home (chicago) have some old preludes and dont know the magic inside - so ill try to hit those up when i go back home (im away at school) in 1.5 weeks. ill post when i pick one up and convert to p28 though!
do you think no problems with fuel maps would arise if i were to just plug in a conversion harness with a p28 obd1? do i need one out of a prelude for the right maps fuel maps? were p28s even put in preludes? what used car wreck (hehe) can i look in to find myself a p28 ecu?
