Default ECU question

Okay i looked through all the older threads and nothing really answered my question,

I'm looking into buying a hondata s200 for my 94 Prelude SRV, i know that the ecu in my car is the OBD I p13 ECU, correct? if so, the shop that i got the quote from told me that im going to need a p28 ecu with OBD II, is that true? why isnt the stock ecu any good for this application?

NO SIR! That is most definately wrong!!! Whatever shop you went to- give them the boot. You never want to change an OBDI to OBDII, OBDII are compatible with OBDI ecus, but not the other way around. Hopefully someone else gives their 2cents because i need for them to explain more about how it works.

Yes, He is right. The reason you cannot use an obdII ecu on an OBDI car is because the OBDII is setup for the newer emissions regulations and have ports for a secondary o2 bung, which you don't have. Get a p28 from an OBDI, thats what I did, it plugs right up.

Yep. P28 runs great on a h22. But someone mentioned that it may run rich? I'm not sure at all. Look in to that. But all said and done.

If you are going to be getting hondata, a p28 would work fantatsic. It doesnt matter how it runs because you will be customizing all your fuel and ignition maps to your setup. Hondata hasnt written a program that enables them to use the P13 with their equipment, so they went for a cheap solution, a P28. They can be found for very cheap. The ECU is still going to need to be ZIF socketed and a few other things checked or removed. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, DO NOT plug a p28 directly into your car and go drive around without hondata tuning. They were not designed or mapped to run with an H22

yeah, that has happened to a few of my customers who thought they had obd2 p28's! LOL...told them to look closer and realized it said p2p or whatever it was. As for the original post, everyone has mentioned very valid reasons. You can also use your p13 for hondata...but i always recommend my customers with stock p13's and p72's to keep them as stock ecu's since they are actually worth more as stock! Definately look into getting a p28, and as 98typesh said, dont run the p28 until its tuned.

Hondata doesn't support P13 ecu's, and never will..

Do not run a P28 that is not chiped and tuned for your H22!!!!!!

How much tuning do you plan on doing? Are you going turbo? or all motor? What features are you looking for? Do you have a stock intake manifold?

These are all questions you should be asking? There are a few cheaper options then Hondata that are as good if not better..
1) I think Neptune has limited support for P13 ecu's!!! HRTUNING is the writer..
2) Crome Pro if you would like to tune yourself..Much cheaper then Hondata and easier to tune then uberdata. and may have P13 support someday .
3) Uberdata is free but not as easy to tune as Crome pro, and you'll have to switch to P28, P30, p72
