Default Cracked F20/F22 head. Reliable place to purchase replacement...

I'd like to start off by saying I've always been a Civic/Integra guy so if someone asked this question in the civic/del sol forum I would have many answers for them, but this scenario is a bit different.

Basically, a good friend of mine just bought a pretty mint oondition(body/interior) 93 base model Prelude for $500 bucks. The only problem is that the head is cracked. I dont know how it happened or anything like that, but I know it leaks a significant amount of oil. The guy that originally owned it said it started eating oil frequently so he brought it to a mechanic that said there is a crack in the head.

So basically, he is looking for either a new head or the complete longblock. He's not interested in doing an H Series swap even though it would be beneficial performance wise. I've already searched http://www.hmotorsonline.com as they are the most reputable online place I know of but they don't have much in terms of F series.

Now that you have some background as I hate people that start threads that are vague as hell and ask a stupid question like "where can I buy a motor" as there are hundreds of threads on these subjects, here are my questions. To you Prelude/Accord guys this should not be a difficult question.

1. What is the EXACT motor that would be in this car? It is a BASE model 1993 Prelude. I know its an F series but I'm not sure if its an F20 or an F22 as I do not know much about Preludes so I wont lie like I do. I do not have access to the car right now and I've personally never seen it before so I havent had the chance to figure this out. While shopping for heads knowing the motor code would be somewhat beneficial, haha.

2. Other than Hmotors and local junkyards because all of my local junkyards have squat in terms of Hondas. Once in a while you'll find a Civic but teenagers have already stripped the hell out of them. Luckily I know I should be able to find the whole swap and/or the head for this motor pretty cheap as these are usually scrapped for H Series. Are there any places that you guys can reccomend?

3. I know that many of you would say "its not worth it", and "do this instead" but he really has no interest in performance or anything along those lines. He's basically interested in buying a nice car for $500 bucks, throwing a grand or so into it, and having a decent car to drive around. So you guys don't have to waste your time with those options.

Finally, I'd like to say that I appreciate all legit responses as I could use some honest opinions. I know this post is longer than it needs to be but as I said earlier I wanted to be as descriptive as possible as I HATE vague threads with horrible grammar. Then after you help them...they dont check the post for another week. I'll be checking this fairly often so if anyone asks a question I'll answer it to the best of my knowledge ASAP.

Thanks ALOT for any information in advance. I appreciate it very much!

Honestly I wouldn't buy from anyone other than Hmotorsonline. I have heard too many horror stories to put a couple grand of hard earned money on the line for a stupid engine. Just get the H and call it a day.

EDIT: Also, if you just buy the longblock for around 1k, that is still in the price range. It will bolt up to any F/H trans that might be in there currently. And wiring VTEC will be simple. However, I don't know how you would be able to find funds for the ECU. its around a couple hundred for a P13.

I understand completely. I was hoping since most people yank the F motor in favor of an H series....these base model SOHC non vtec F series would be fairly easy to come by.

I also heard only good things from hmotors and not many good things concerning any other online distributers. I have this posted in the WTB forum as well as I'd be overjoyed to have someone PM me saying they're local to me and have the full longblock with a spun bearing for really cheap. That way I could use the head for my buddys lude and help the seller out by getting that "useless" motor out of his garage.

Thanks for the help man, I appreciate you taking the time to read through my really long thread.

Also, you seem to know your Preludes. Do you know what the engine code is for this motor? Base model SOHC 92-96 lude. This sounds like a really simple question which it is, but while I'm waiting for an answer I'll continue searching Honda-Tech and I'll probably come across the answer to that question.

ALSO.....I had NO idea that an H series motor would bolt up to an F series trans. Surely i'll still need the harness/ECU from the H. Thats way opposite compared to B and D which im used to. And I agree with everything you're saying about the H motors but simplicity is his main concern. Vtec is also nothing he's in need of, but that depends on what kind of deals he can find.

haha everyones gonna say get the H no matter how many times you tell them its not what you want.

I believe F22a1 is the head you're looking for, and you're right it should be relatively cheap/abundant. there are several junkyards that have online stores on ebay that you could prolly pick one up from.
