Default Best place(s) to buy new/used H22 motors?

Hey guys, I guess I'm in the market for a new motor It sucks since I just bought the darn thing two months ago, but oh well. It's either fix it or junk it at this point, I guess. I'm not looking for anything fancy. A low mileage motor with a warranty would be really nice. Or something like that. I have 140k on the current motor, so anything is better than that lol. I'm having a hard time finding a place to buy H22 motors though? Lots of Civic/Integra motors of course, but as always, it seems the Prelude is the long lost forgotten cousin of those "other" Honda cars...

PS: Please don't say the junkyard, because I've tried that. There isn't a junkyard in my state that has a decent motor that I would trust, even if they had it lol. I'm looking for engine rebuild companies, or places that specifically work with Honda and/or Prelude motors and know what they're doing. The dealership that my car is sitting at currently found a "used" motor with 90k miles on it for $3750 for me, plus $1700 labor to install. That's a little outrageous for me.... considering I come from places like the WRX scene where you can get an entirely BRAND NEW EJ257 (STi short block) for $1799.

How is their service/quality/reliability/etc? I only see two H22 motors that will work for me I think, and both are over $3000 lol. I bought my car for $4000 this sucks

Hmotorsonline is your best bet for reliability. What exactly messed up on your current motor?

thats to bad you not close to vegas... as I would sell you my jdm motor thats in my prelude.. you would be able to hear it run before you bought it..

but in any case.. check craigslist. to see if there are any local people that are selling h22 in your area... if nothing.. then a jdm importer... is your best bet..GL

Being from Colorado, and having gone through this same situation, I say go to Hmotors. You don't need to look for the full swap with tranny and such, just the longblock. You can have all of your other stuff swapped over to that motor, and it will run with your current chipped ecu, or a stock P13 for your car.

I went through a local company, and they brought my engine from Chicago, and it had a dented oil pan, busted off TPS, and a few other small issues. I paid the same ~ 1500 as I would have with a motor shipped from Hmotors, and had to do more work in the end, but did have the motor maybe 2 days sooner? Since talking to the Hmotors guys, I would have been more confident in that motor, and wish I had gone that route.

Also, there may be some local guys willing to help you do the job, for alot cheaper than 1700 bucks. If you want, shoot me a PM and I will see what I can drum up for you. If I was still there I would do it for a fair price, and it would be an end product you were happy with.

You can try Eric Japan Engines in Chicago.
We have sourced about 10 motors through them.
IIRC about $900+shipping for a JDM H22A longblock.
http://ericjapanautoengines.com/2448.html
I currently run 2 engines from there. No issues.
Local guy had a problem with one, but at this point I am blaming installer error......
Young Kid+1st time swap=Problems.

Is there any way to tell for sure what kind of mileage came/comes on the motor you purchase via Hmotors? I mean, is there a VIN or another number stamped on the block or anything that you can trace back through the DMV or something and see the last reported mileage or anything like that? Just curious, especially since Hmotors seems to stock a lot of motors that haven't been produced in 10+ years at this point.... for example, I'm trying to maybe buy an H22A4 from them for my Prelude. But I want to know for sure that if they say it has 45,000 miles, it has 45,000 miles.

Thanks for all that info and feedback. I definitely would love to know if you know of any reputable Honda shops or anyone who knows how to do a Honda swap for less than $1700 lol

Where in Colorado are you? Theres PFI in Fort collins and I know for a fact that Brent has a few compleat motors. There number is 970-377-2216 Or pm me if that number dosent work cause they just moved to a much larger shop. Brent is an H22 expert and set anything you want up. I actually have a set of eagle rods that are fixed from a spun bearing, but they are strong as always you just have to run oversized bearings.. but ill let them go cheap

Does PFI do a lot of motor swaps? I am in Denver. I'm willing to drive to FoCo if they are reputable and knowledgable, especially about H22s! Thanks man, I'll have to hit them up. Are you in CO? I know Eagle rods are nice. Where can I get oversized bearings?

I know I still need a motor.... looks like Hmotors is still the best bet?

You're doing a swap because you're burning oil? You could rebuild it for less than $3000. Too bad you're not closer

I would call Brent first, he might be able to get you one for pretty cheap but you have to talk to him... Ya im in greeley so just north of you... PFI is one of the best places in CO to get a motor swap done. Call Brent and see how much he wants for one of his old H22's or order it and have Brent install it.. he can do it pretty quick... He is the only person that I let touch any of my cars.

I don't know about that. I'd almost rather just buy a lower mileage block from someone like Hmotors online, ya know? I was told that by the time you get done rebuilding the block, you really just should have gotten a new motor. It's not just burning oil, it's been a real headache http://www.************.com/forums/s...50#post2807250

Thanks a million man. I am going to call PFI on Monday. Hopefully talk to Brent. Is he their lead mechanic or tuner or both? Because I am also trying to find someone to tune me up because I can't get the damn thing to run right stupid PO put wrong injectors on there, plus some idiot on craigslist tuned me on Crome and basically it sucks lol.

That would be awesome if Brent had an H22 already available and it had low mileage... and if they can do a swap for less than $1700 then I'm sold. Especially if they can tune me once they're all done. Hell, if I could save some money by going to them, now you've got me thinking about throwing some cams on there or something. Ahhh but maybe I should just stay stock for now.

Thanks again. I will see what Brent can do. I looked at their website and if they can get so many cars to run 10s at Bandimere? Holy **** I'm sold. Those are 9 second cars at sea level.

Brent owns PFI, and knows his stuff. it won't be super cheap, but it will be correct, and you will be happy with it! He built and tuned alot of 5-600+ H22 cars.

Brent is the owner and the best tuner in CO IMO... He has built more then 5 to 600whp H22's and tons of 1000+whp cars

Well PFI finally answered their phone and they were great! I hope to get a motor through Hmotors soon and have PFI install it. THey were very friendly and knowledgable and it seems like a great place to do business with once I can gather everything up.

Why do you have a brand new factory replacement motor from Honda with 0 miles on it just sitting around? lol I'm just curious since this is your first post, I think. Is it OBD1? JDM Or EDM? Either way, $3000 is a lot. I have looked at the specs and it's only like a 20hp difference between the H22A7 and the H22A4. For $3000 I could get my H22A4 from HMotorsonline for $1300 and cam the thing for $500 more and make 40 more hp. But that is a good deal for a brand new motor. Why are you getting rid of it again?

Can I get anyone else to chime in on the Euro Accord R H22?

i made this account just to sell i i took in in on trade for a eclipse motor i built a guy. i gave all the numbers to my buddy who works at a Honda dealer and he ran them for me and he said it is a edm Honda factory replacement motor if you would like picks i have them it has 0 miles on it. also has a full aem pulley set on it also!. everyone tht i have talked to said i can get 3000 out of it. the euro rs were balanced to closer tolerances and their for from wht i have read they read line at 9000 rpms instead of 8500 and as my understanding tht with exhaust and cams you can see close to if not more than 300 horse!.i work at a very reputable shop here in Michigan called strictly import motor sports. so i do know a good motor from a bad one. also like all motors i have ever sold if when you receive them and its put into ur car and than something is wrong full refund of Ur money. never had it happen but tht is what i tell everyone. if you would like to talk about this in more detail and send you some pics my number is 1517-648-9679 i mean i guess the question i always ask is would you rather spend tht money on a motor with a unknown mileage or one with o miles tht you wont have a problem with?
