Default 92 Lude keeps dying

I have a 92 Prelude Si that keeps dying on me. It starts just fine but after driving it for about 10 minutes it dies. I turn off the ignition and it starts right up again. I can drive it again anywhere from 1/2 mile to 5 miles and it dies, shut off the key and it will start right up again. When i turn the key it sounds like i can hear my fuel pump prime and it starts. right after all of this started I did replace the fuel pump but it still happens. Any suggestions? I also replaced the main relay. I replaced the ignition also about 4 months ago because it wouldn't start.

did you replace the fuel filter when you installed the new pump? it sounds to me like a clogged fuel filter

First, you have my sympathy. I HATE electrical problems.

With that said, check the connection to the fuel pump. If you soldered ANYTHING, re-solder it. Also, and probably more importantly, check your main ground wires, and check your under-hood fuse box. It sounds like something is possibly loose electrically. Also, it honestly sounds like you may be losing fuel pressure. How does it die? Does it shut off electrically, or do all of your lights come on and the engine sputters?

I haven't checked for any stored codes but will check this weekend. When it dies the motor just quits and i believe its the check engine light comes on until I pull over and completely stop then the normal dash lights come on like before you cycle the key. It died the other day just as i pulled into home. It restarted just fine and idled for approximately 1 minute and died. Started right up again , ran for 1 min and died. It did this about 5 or 6 times in a row. Just to let you know I had a mechanic friend of mine install the pump and after it was in it didn't start so I left it with him. A couple days later I talked to him and he said the ground wire at the pump had broken so he fixed it. It ran great for 2 days then back to where I'm at now. I'm thinking that it may still be bad so I'll check it out tomorrow. Now I don't know if this has anything to do with it but a couple of days before all of this began i hooked up a 650 watt amp to my stereo.

I'd bet it's that ground wire losing connection. If it were the fuel delivery system losing pressure, I BELIEVE (it's been awhile) that the car would lose power first and sputter out.

Pulled fuel pump and ground is good. Put fuel pump back in after cleaning all of the connections and it fired right up. It idled for about 5 minutes and died. Cycled the the key and it started and ran for maybe a minute to minute and a half and died, Did this a couple more times before I gave up. I can hear the fuel pump priming every time I start it so I'm at my wits end. It seems to be happening more frequent now. HELP!!!!!!!

The next time it dies quickly keep an eye on the dash lights. It's imperative to see if when it dies the dash lights come on or stay off. This could help point you to the problem.

Ok when it dies the battery light and oil light come on. Hooked up a pressure gauge and pressure is 36 psi and doesn't drop when it dies.

Then its likely the ignition switch is good. I would swap out the main relay. A bad coil, ignitor, and even a bad oxygen sensor can cause your issues.

Success!!! Changed out the ignitor and and it fired right up and let it idle and it didn't die. Drove it around for a couple of hours without dying. I gotta thank you guys because this is the 3rd time I've come here and been able to resolve an issue. Keep up the good work.

Gotta love a happy ending!

Though, that's a helluva weird way for the ignitor to die, it's pretty often "all or nothing" on those.

Glad it got fixed!

Both the ignitor and the coil can show issues after they've warmed up, I myself have had issues with a faulty coil showing issues, in fact after replacing a bad one, I had no issues AND got a 4 mpg bump in gas mileage
