Default 5th Generation Prelude as first car?

Hello

I am approaching the age of when i can own my first car.

I was thinking other cars, but the 5th generation preludes caught my eye.

Would you recommend this car? I will be buying it used for around 12 grand.

other than the timing belt are there any things that i should be worried about with a used prelude?

i dont want to get a civic/corolla, because its way too common.

thanks

SB

Insurance on a Prelude will be very high if you are young. (Young = under 25 to insurance companies.)

I agree. The 4 spd SS automatic is prone to failure.

Its gonna be 125 a month for me whenever i can find a 5 gen i like. And thats under my parents name, both of which have been driving for 35 years and have a spotless driving record. Trust me, preludes ARE expensive!

Oh yeah, im 18.

I was just kidding about the corolla man, i don't know why that would be an option if you are considering a lude.

Insurance is going to vary drastically from area to area - apply for a couple quotes online to get an idea of what it will be like for you. But in general, a Prelude will cost more because it has a fairly high risk of theft.

My '97 isn't my first car, but it is the first car I've ever owned. The previous couple "cars" (I use the term loosely) were owned by my parents & on semi-permanent loan to me & my siblings. Things like A/C, power windows, and cruise control have spoiled me rotten compared to the crappers I'd had to put up with before it.

Try owning an R or any integra for that matter..The Prelude is not so bad.

As stated earlier try insuring it under your parents name. That will save you alot of $$$.

The 5th gen was my 2nd vehicle...1st car. Great car IMO. Very stable, smooth power, good braking etc. Also, you can't go wrong w/the Honda reliability.

Your situation sounds exactly like mine dude...i got my '97 Lude towards the end of September of this year and waited damn near two years to get one...trust me its worth it. my first car was a beater...****** '90 Pontiac Sunbird in poor conditions...moving on up now though . The insurance shouldn't be that much depending on where you live. my mom thought it would sky rocket but it didn't go up too much more when compared to the Shitbird. They considered it a coupe and not a sports car so it worked out price wise. Since my car was pre-owned, i have to save up and get those damn belts replaced too. Gonna take away from my car part fund...also not to mention i got my first ticket yesterday on thanksgiving....64 in a 40...yep

Im 17 and just purchased a used 97 prelude. Excellent choice and im sure you can find a decent one for 12G's. I would defently make sure its got no more than 60k on it for that price. If its a automatic then make sure you take it for a long long test drive to test the gear shifting first. Other than that no probs.

As long as you don't have a SR22 on your record, insurance shouldn't be that bad. It is a small price to pay to drive a sporty car. Putting the car in your parents name is the way to go.

my first car was a POS 92 stanza. then after 2 1/2 yrs. of saving I got a 2001 SH . My insurance is 2400/yr. in my parents name. I technically drive my dad's work truck.

PS - I'm 21 with 2 speeding tickets
