1991 Honda Prelude stalls when gas gets low
Hello - I have a 1991 Honda Prelude automatic with a 2.1L - it sat all winter and has 140K miles
The problem is after I get below a 1/2 tank of gas it starts to stall when I slow down and get the RPMs below 1000, doesn't matter if the motor is cold or hot. Only when the gas gets low does this happen. I can coast up to a stop sign in Neutral and it will still happen unless I bring down the idle real slow. The down shifting seems normal and smooth. After it stalls all I need to do is wait about 15 seconds and it will fire right back up and idle clean. Otherwise the car runs smooth and never has problems at highway speeds.
Things I have tried…
Air Filter
Fuel Filter
Plugs
Wires
Rotor
1 can of Isopropyl
3 bottles of injector cleaner
PVC valve
cleaned the throttle body
Transmission treatment (improved upshifting smoothness)
Motor oil treatment
Checked vacuum hose to the fuel pressure regulator and its dry inside and out
Disconnected the vacuum hose to the EGR valve and it still stalled.
There is always pressure in the gas tank when the gas cap is removed.
I have tried to running without the gas cap.
I am in the process of replacing the fuel regulator. (update - didn't help)
I have seen comments that it must be the fuel pump and that it can't be the fuel pump??
Again many thanks if someone can give me some advice.

why don't you actually clean up the EGR valve seeing as your ECU is telling you that it's something to do with the EGR that's wrong?
It's probably blocked up with carbon.

I just relized why there was an error 12 code. I disconnected the EGR valve to test and that triggered the error 12. I forgot to reset it.
I have now replaced the fuel regulator but same problem. I have pulled the fuel pump and plan to replace, the filter was bent straight up so only about 1/2 of an inch of the filter was in gas with the fuel gauge on 1/8 tank. Maybe they are supposed to be bent upwards. Eitherway its getting replaced and we will see what happens.
Well I replaced the pump and filter, same issue, however gas tank was very low. So I added 4 gallons of gas and it ran fine. I looked for damage on the gas tank but nothing obvious. I guess these preludes are just not meant to be low on gas.
