Default Yamaha TZ250

I have really taken an interest in these bikes lately, and I was wondering a few things about them, because Im having seconds thoughts on what bike I might get next.

I haven't looked very in depth, but I was hoping a few of you could give me some info on these bikes.

-What years were/are they manufactured?
-Are the good bikes? (handling, reliable, quick)
-Any well known problems with them?
-Are these bikes rare? (all Im seeing are bikes in other countries, would I have to ship it here?!?!)
-Are ANY of them street legal? or would I have to MAKE it?

I looked at http://www.tz250racing.com and got a little bit of info, but not much.

Thanks.

You want one of these for a street bike or a trackbike? I wouldn't really recommend one for a street bike.

I looked into getting one as well (for track only), but it just ended up being to costly (and timely for me) with all the maint that needs to be done after X amount of time. I think Luke would be the person to talk to about this, if you can get a hold of him.

Well I would like to have it as a street bike.

I was highly considering getting a liter bike in a few months, but I really don't need it, and I really love the styling of "GP style" 250's and 400's (Apri RS250s, NSRs etc etc) . Plus they get hella gas milage.

These are two strokes, you can't just put gas in them and go, you need to mix. Most people that race these re-build the topend after 2-3 trackdays (there is the cost and time thing). The powerband is even narrower than that of a 600 too, you need to keep the revs high to remain in the sweet spot.

Are two strokes street legal in your state? They are not in Cali.

Oh **** I didn't realize that, that kinda sucks.

Im sure they are legal here (Tennessee), but I will check, Im pretty cool with most of the cops around so I will ask them

tz's and honda rs125/250s arent made for the street. If you want a street 2stroke, get a nsr, rgv, or tzr. I want to see you register a out of country bike w/ a 13 digit vin. Its hard to do, thats why grey market bikes are worth so much

btw - My old vfr400 is for sale by the new owner, $3500 and its already titled.

I'm about 6'3 150 lbs.

I would love to have a NSR, TZR, or VFR as well, just the markets on all these bikes seem pretty small.

They are great bikes, handle better than anything you are likely to have ridden before, are reliable if the engine is good and 150MPH quick depending on gearing (although straighline isnt the point)

If you must have a 2 stroke on the road either buy a jap TZ/RGV/NSR or better still an Aprilia RS and tune the nuts off of it.

I know a rider on a TZ who is 250lbs + he has no problems with lap records.

If you're looking for a plated two stroke, do your research and wait. Every so often, you'll come up on a good deal (I know someone that recently sold a tzr250 for $4200) and you better jump on it right away because they'll go quick.

Prepare for topend rebuilds, blown pistons, crapped out cranks, and the wait for parts but its worth it when it runs good

I just bought a TZ250, it's actually my second TZ. It's a track bike and it is NOT meant for a beginner, hell 99.5% of experienced riders out there couldn't ride one of these to it's potential, including me. Don't be fooled by the 250cc engine. These bikes have a higher power/weight ratio than most street bikes out there.

Oh, and by the way, this is the 2003+ TZ250

$22k

93hp and 225lbs. Also, it's pretty common for these bikes to read 90+hp at the rear wheel.

if you get nsr/tzr/rgv, you better take it to the track. Thats where you'll really find out how fun they are

Sweet bike fire

oh another note, I'm hoping to get around 60hp from my nsr when I'm done with it (up from around 40hp stock; just HRC card, chambers, airbox mod, reeds, jetkit).

60hp+300lb bike = fun

LOL a std 03 wont make that on the track, not even close.

Er.....its not really common and if you are looking at race jetting rather than 'lets see how much power we can show@fantasytuner.com' with a good set of 02 crankcases along with kit pistons/barrels/cdi/pipes/cans/carbs/loom and stator you are making 88 to 90. That setup is not common it is trick.

Bank on 78-85 depending on year. Its not that I want to argue its just that if you are running a race bike you need to know your stuff.

Ok, I'm just goin by what I've heard about the new ones. The newest one I've had is a 97, and it's got a fresh topend build, and I haven't been to the track with it yet, so I have no idea what the power will be like compared to the 93 that I had way back like 4 years ago.

Thanks for the info
