Default My story for the day

Was told i should put this here:

So it was round three at the race track (motorcycle road racing) for me today at summit point. The day started as usual, everyone slacking and leaving late. Gas up the truck and head out to West Virgina with my new trailer i just got. The first session out started like those before it, easy for a few laps, get back into the groove, etc. Started picking up the pace a few laps in, comfortable with the knee dragging, lean angles, throttle blah blah. First session ended and that was that.

Something happened between session one and two. I pulled up to pit out and just wanted to run the **** out of the bike. Took a moderate first lap and then it was on. Coming around turns faster and more confident then ever before. Started passing people left and right, started tucki ng my knee in against the bike to get a little more lean angle, all was well. Then a few laps in it happened.

Comming around T10, my "regular" pace would be entering at 80ish and exiting ~95. I came in hot. Really hot. I glanced down right before dropping into the turn to see 110 mph. Way faster then usual. The knee touches down. I tuck it towards the bike and its still dragging. I have to pull my elbow in just a bit to keep it off the asphalt. I made the turn-in, moto gp style So as im starting to straighten the bike as i roll on the throttle. This time, just a tiny bit too much. Rear wheel breaks loose; the bike goes sideways. Next thing i know i am being catapulted into the air. My head is probably about 4 feet off the ground. My legs are straight up in the air. Im looking backwards at my bike as well as other riders working their way around the turn. Basically a backwards headstand 4 feet in the air at ~125 mph.

First thought was OH ****! this is going to hurt..... My head touches down (which i didnt even feel, thanks to Shoei) follow by my shoulder and my legs/feet come smashing to the ground afterward. I feel hard wack against the top of my foot. I start sliding. Spinning down the track i see my bike catching up to me. The next thing i know i am sliding down the track trying to kick my bike away from me. Looking up to see a still sky, i thought i was down moving. I put my elbows/hands down to stand up...... nope, still sliding. eventually i come to a stop. I hope up and sprint off the track. I stand there for a minutes as the red flags come out. Needing a minute, i just sat down and waited for some help to arrive.

I got my self together, picked my bike up, and rode it back to the pits. I slid about 300 ft on asphalt at about 125mph, stood up and rode my bike away. This is amazing to me, thank you cowhide. Soon the pain set in, my shoulder hurts when i think about moving my arm , and i can barely walk, of course, this is after getting my bike in decent shape and riding a few more sessions.

My buddy was on the way to the turn when i crashed so i sadly have no pictures expect for the gear and the bike, which held up amazingly well. Someone was filming another rider and the caught the end half of me sliding. They are supposed to email it to me, which i'm doubting i am ever going to see.

And that concludes my exciting story for the day.

O, and the one thing that I'm a little mad at myself for.... I didnt bother to bolt the video camera to the bike this session

And o yea, i ride a gixxer

Glad to see you posted it here too. Tough break man. It makes me glad that I have my one piece suit coming tomorrow for when I decide to canyon ride or go to the track.

yea im a live and kicking. Thought i probably just spring my ankle/foot, but it looks like a black marshmallow from my ankle to my toes, so one of those bones broke

I'm doing the ole one hand type. I cant get my right hand up to the keyboard very easily.

Never broken a bone in my foot before, im guessing they probably dont do anything like when you break a finger they tape them together. lol

Im going to give everything a day or two and see how it goes before i worry about going to the doctors. Im kind of used to getting injured

Glad to see you came out alright.

But I would advise to go get checked at once. Once I broke a finger in my hand, didn't payed too much attention to it, and then when I went to the doctor, they had to perform surgery because the bone had reattached itself in the wrong position.

Better safe than sorry. Heal quick man

Picts of GF or I'm locking this thread

I'd love to see a video of the "Incident", some how they never quite match the interpretation by the fallen rider.

yeah, im still amazed at the crash and how little damage was done to myself and the bike. Obviously I need a new helmet, boots and gloves are useable, but the suit took a hit. I'm going to try and find a leather repair place and see what they can do.

Well the video is up on youtube now. You dont see any of the crash, but you hear it then see me sliding down the track. I come through the turn at 25 sec. Been sitting here watching it comparing my corner speed and trying to focus on my body position. Seems like everything is right as it should be, just a little too much throttle on the way out...

You should be entering and exiting that turn at the same speed... Come out of 9 at around 95 and hit around 125 under the bridge, downshift and brake slightly (if you have a slipper or even a 600/750 you may only have to downshift and not brake) to drop it in for turn 10 at around 95-100 and when you're straight up and down again around the rumble strips on the left you should be going the same speed that you entered that turn at. Then accelerate down the straight up to whatever speed your ***** are willing to take before braking before turn 1....

Glad you're alright. It's a fast turn for sure... I crashed in turn 3 last year...

hmm.... Ive always followed the "keep maintenance throttle as you enter and slowly apply more throttle throughout the turn" rule. My exit speeds are always higher then my entry speeds

Maintenance throttle is just that you don't goto 0% throttle ever while going through a turn. When you're doing maintenance throttle you aren't accelerating at all either. It's just a constant throttle position.

Anyways the proper acceleration through a turn is based off of 1 general rule: The 40/60 rule. That is that a bike at constant speed is in a 50/50 weight distribution, you want to be at 40/60 when accelerating through a turn. To maintain this through the turn you have to constantly roll on the throttle. And you start this as soon as possible. There is no one exact point to do this. It's just as soon as possible. Take turn 4. You're accelerating WOT coming out of turn 3 down the hill. Let off the throttle just for a split second to turn it in at about 125 then back on the throttle almost all the way until you're out of the turn. But like turn 1 you can't start accelerating until about the apex.

yup. I've read it about 10 times and still look back at it to remember stuff. As I get quicker I forget a rule or question something I'm doing and look at that to see if I'm [freak]ing it up or not.

The speedo is a tool that can be used to help with consistency. Why tape up something that can help? People tape it up because they become too obsessed with how fast they're going or it's distracting for them. I use it to make sure my corner entry speeds are consistent or slightly quicker each time around. Hard to do with my digital tach. If I had an analog tach I may tape over the speedo...

Judging by where the bike ended up I'm not sure what happened. If I ran that corner too fast I'm ending up in the gravel trap on the far side of the track... not the inside...

I dont need to prove anything by saying 110-130, i was on the bike. My first track day i was comming through there at 75.

spun up the back comming out of the turn. Back wheel came around my left side caught and threw me over the top. Thats where we ended up

I am not judging you... I am judging the riders I saw grand ma'ing through that corner... looked about 75'ish MAX. no biggie man. Spinning up the rear and winding up on the inside of the track is perfectly logical... done that myself once or twice
