Default Honda CBR600F4i and goodies

Hey guys, I was looking for a motorcycle specifically a Honda CBR600F4i, and I wanted to know what are the pros and cons about it are, if any come to mind, I am a college student and new to riding in general, but I have heard great things about it, I mainly wanted to know of any design flaws or quirks. Also everything needed to keep safe, i.e. helmet, gloves, the works really, as well as any brands you would recommend. I currently drive a manual Honda ES1 if that makes a difference. Also I assume its fairly easy to get above 40MPG, not like I am that worried as long as its above 30. Thanks for everyones input. Thanks in advance.

the f4i's a bit fast for a first bike, though plenty of people have started on one.

all in all it's an outstanding bike, perfect blend of performance, reliability, and everyday comfort. these bikes can do it all, and not break your back or your wallet doing it. the only problems with these bikes are the CCTL (easily fixed w/ a $50 APE manual unit that replaces the OEM) and the reg/rectifier, which isn't as much of a problem as it is on the F2/F3's. huge aftermarket and plenty of cheap secondhand parts, and they're absolute tanks. you can abuse them, wad them up, pretty much do everything short of throwing them off a bridge, and they'll run. i would get about 40 mpg more or less on mine when i rode it on the street.

as far as gear, my advice is to budget about a grand for good stuff. you need a leather jacket, gauntlet style gloves, comfy helmet w/ snell and DOT/BSI ratings, boots that cover the ankle, and pants of some sort (textile or leather). try everything on before you buy, because fitment is as important as construction. a lid should fit snugly, but not so tight that it causes pain/nausea. all other gear should follow the same criteria.

finally, take the MSF, get endorsed, and get insurance!

Thanks for the reply, A few questions what is the CCTL and the MSF, I take it that it is more or less a motorcycle safety course?

MSF = Motorcycle Safety Foundation (course).
CCTL = CCT = cam chain tensioner.

If I'm not mistaken, F4i's have an appetite for the R/R (regulator/rectifier). But these are all minor quibbles.

Where do you buy that APE CCT? I've need one and I'm getting sick of the noise. As for gas mileage i dont think i've seen above 35 mpg on my f4i, but I'm not very good at math

I bought mine from here:

For F4i's, you only need one. It's hard to get to, but there's a write-up online somewhere.

i started on an F4i. Not really the ideal choice because it's quite a lot of bike for a beginner. But i kept it below 7k for a long time as i got used to the bike and worked my way up the rev range until i lived at 8k all the time. My desire for more torque led me towards vtwin motors.

For gear, anything but icon, and just wear it.

Btw my f4i is my first bike, with the exception of dirtbikes. I got it like a month and a half ago. Havent kept it below 7k though, conisdering theres absolutely no power there, and I've already had to dodge a few cars almost running me off the road. Just take it slow, and dont try to impress other people on the road, it's not worth loseing your license/life/fingers/legs etc. for. Always know whats ahead of you, and expect the unexpected. People in cars blowin up their cellphones are not watching out for you.
