Default help!! BLACK STUFF OUT OF CR250

I just got a cr250, and when i let it sit there and warm up black stuff like carbin but wet comes out of where the two pipes meet. like the header and the muffler. it actually made a little puddle on my garage floor. What do you think this is?

that's not a header that's an expansion chamber.. if it is black it is fuel and it's mixing with water condensation

That's what I'm thinking also. Probably running rich and have fouled up plugs (edit I have no idea if a 2stroke even has plugs).

it's an exhaust leak, and you're running rich probably. does the stuff smell like gas? if it's jetted, you might want to lean it out a bit, some needles have moveable locating clips, move it up a notch to enrich and down a notch to lean. if this all sounds like a bunch of jibber-jabber then take it to a shop, or go buy a book or two.

It's not a big deal. All two strokes have residue left in the exhaust, it is left over oil from the combustion process. You will probably also end up with a trail coming out your silencer and running down the silencer. Your bike may be jetted rich, and could contribute to it, but you won't really know until you take it out for a good hard blast and then check the plug afterward. You are looking for a dark golden brown color on the plug. White indicates lean and black indicates rich.

alright im going to take it out friday and saturday and check the plugs. If its running rich is this going to hurt the bike. after i fidn out if its rich all i have to do is turn the needle down. where is that located? I am also going to change the oil with some gold specrtrum oil pretty soon before winter.

Running rich won't do any damage to the motor. If it is too rich you may experience bogging when you go to open it up. Another side effect of being too rich is that you may foul spark plugs more frequently. Once you find out where you stand as far as jetting goes, i.e. too rich/lean, you will need to make adjustments to the carb.

There are a few different parts to your carb that control different parts of the throttle range. The main parts that you should be concerned with are the pilot jet, main jet, and needle. The pilot jet controls fueling at idle and somewhere up to 1/4 throttle, at that point the main jet starts to take over. I use the needle to make fine adjustments once I've settled on the correct main jet.

As far as I know there aren't any screws on the carb that will allow you to make jetting changes other than maybe an air screw which can help you tune your tip in. To make changes you are going to have to change the actual jets in the carb. Main jets can sometimes be accessed through a bowl drain in the bottom of the bowl. Generally pilot jets are going to require dissasembly of the bottom of the carb. The needle has a number of different positions that you can set it at for fine tuning, in order to change the position you will have to disassemble the top of the carb and change the position of a clip that holds the needle.

If you're a do it yourselfer and have some mechanical knowledge you should be able to figure this out by just tinkering, if you run into problems try to get ahold of a factory service manual. It will explain everything pretty well.

just checked the spark plug, and the electrode or the tip is golden brown and like 3 threads are black, but i think thats normal. so i might be running a little rich, but nothing to mess with. in the spring after i change my plug and change the oil with gold specrtum i will get it tuned right. Anyway, how do you guys winterize your bike? Stabilizer, dont think you can do that in 2 strokes but idk, drain all fluids out, and or start it up about 3 times a week and let it run?

Mixed fuel goes stale quickly, I wouldn't run fuel in a 2 stroke that I cared about that was older than 1 month. As far as winterizing, I would drain the fuel from the tank and carb to avoid varnishing. The oil in the cases is just there to lube the transmission on a 2 stroke so it should be fine to sit over the winter.
