A good friend of mine went down on Sunday.
We were on the freeway exiting and I guess he was coming in a bit hot and there were a few riders lined up on the off ramp at the end of a blind corner which is usually empty. I was the last rider in that lineup and he came up on my tail end at about 40-45mph, but swerved to avoid hitting me and the other riders, then I believe he panic braked once he hit a cattle guard (metal grating in the road). From there, he clipped a post and was ejected about 80-100 feet where he landed on his head and shoulder. He's currently in critical condition and a medically induced coma. They've found three broken ribs, part of the bone on his shoulder blade broken, four lesions in his brain, and internal bleeding in the second layer of his skull.
I'm sharing this with you all because I'm hoping you guys can help. Because it was a single vehicle accident and he was declared at fault, the insurance is only paying $500 towards his medical bills. I'm trying to help him raise money to pay for the costs associated with his accident because he was life flighted out of there and has spent three days in the ICU thus far, so the insurance coverage will make no impact on the bills racking up.
Here's a link to a gofundme account I set up for him; the proceeds will go directly to his sister who is handling his finances.
Edit: Gofundme account removed.
Any little bit will be appreciated whether it be a dollar or a prayer. This man is my best friend, I consider him a brother, he's always been there for me and even in his last moments he put his own life in jeopardy as he swerved out of the way to save mine.

I hope he will be okay... our thoughts are with him.
BTW, I've done the "to hot" exit ramp trick before... didn't hit anything stationary though.

A lot of people come down this off ramp too hot. This freeway was in between Park City and Salt Lake City; it's a 10.1 mile stretch of freeway that goes from 6900ft. elevation to 4372ft. elevation and the ramp is really short. About 1/4 mile before the off ramp is a left side off ramp that's for runaway trucks, that particular ramp takes you up a hill instead of down, to slow down trucks whose brakes couldn't handle the steep downhill grade of the mountain pass.
Usually when I drive my car down this roadway, I leave it in 4th gear and hover the brake pedal the entire 10 miles because gravity alone is enough to keep me at 70+mph.

Can only offer my thoughts for your buddy right now, hope he pulls through on it.
Have seen a friend go down before and it's definitely not something I wish on anyone.

Went to see him yesterday, he's out of his coma and talking now, but he has severe memory loss and it's difficult to understand him when he speaks, he also has brain damage that I don't believe he'll ever recover from. He doesn't remember the accident, doesn't remember my name, but when I walked in the room, the attending nurse asked who I was and he told her I'm his brother.
I think it might be for the best that he can't remember because he's lost so much in the past two weeks that a normal person would probably be pretty upset about. His wallet went missing, phone got shut off, girlfriend left him, lost his job, bike is in the junkyard, lost his home (lived with gf), gf tried selling his car but title is in my name & his, so I stole it from her and gave it to his mom, his second car went missing, and I was told that his left arm may periodically dislocate itself and give him severe pain probably for the rest of his life.

Wow. GF is a straight up bitch. How did his wallet go missing? Such a sad story... I hope all the best and that he gets some more funding.

His wallet wasn't found after the accident. The cops mentioned it to me because they were trying to get a positive ID on him after the accident. He got life flighted from the scene and I was the only one who knew his info and I hopped on my bike and bolted to the hospital as soon as he got on the chopper, so the cops had nothing to go by other than the license plate info which had both of our names on it and my address.
His gf, well, she's one of those self serving people who doesn't really give **** about anyone else; I don't care much for her.

Yeah, here's an update.
In a twist of friggin irony, I was riding to work a couple months later and woke up in the same damn hospital he ended up in. So while I was bed ridden, my newly rehabilitated friend was rallying for my support.
We have the EXACT same scars, same amount of broken ribs, same amount of metal pins in our arms, etc. . It's kinda weird how similar our injuries ended up being so alike.

Damn. Get well soon.
I believe I know the stretch of road. I've been thru SLC on a bike once or twice entering from Wyoming on I-80.

Thoughts are with you. I've had someone close to me have a few close calls till we finally convinced him he had to stop riding :/
Be safe out there.

Damn. This is why I'm scared to buy another bike. I've had one before and had a couple really close calls on it.
Glad you and your buddy are ok.
