Finally bought a motorcycle
Unfortunately, its not a Honda.
Took the MSF a little while back, but between school and moving around a bit, I kept putting off purchasing a motorcycle. I was browsing eBay one morning and came across a 1991 GS500 auction ending in a few hours. Since the motorcycle was located 9 hours away from my current location in VA, but less than an hour from where I grew up, I got in contact with a bunch of friends that ride to see if any of them could pick it up and store it for me. I figured I would end up being outbid at the last minute, but ended up winning the auction with a bid of $705.
I'll be renting a minivan at Thanksgiving when I go home to visit my parents and stuffing the GS in it for the trip back to VA. A friend down here has already said I can use his garage to work on it/store it this winter. My friend that picked it up for me said the carbs could use a good cleaning/rebuild, and I plan on replacing the brake lines and tires as well.
Browsing through the GSTwins site, I saw some really cool builds on there and started getting some ideas. I think having the bike 9 hours away has restrained me quite a bit from going nuts with modifications before even riding it. I've been down that road with cars before, so I'm going to avoid screwing with it for a few years.
As far as gear goes, I'll be picking stuff up over the winter. After viewing a number of threads on 600rr, I'd like to keep use of my feet/ankles, so I'll be getting a pair of race boots. I am currently leaning towards the Sidi Vortice. Also, since I'll only be riding for fun on weekends/afternoons when I do have free time, I picked up a Spidi leather suit used through the WERA classifieds. Back protector, boots, full gauntlet gloves, and a new helmet to replace the dated HJC that I currently have are up next.
Yeah, I'll be dressed like a Power Ranger while riding on a clapped out 500cc air cooled twin. Come at me, bros.
The picture is my friend riding it back from picking it up.
