Icon3 Crash Bang Boom...lucky I wasn't on my bike this morning

This thread would fit nicely in the Civic forum, but more people in /26 know me, so here'it goes...

Headed off to work this morning I was involved in a 3-car wreck after a woman made an unsafe left-hand turn. I was waiting to turn right at a red light and the woman in a green Toyota Camry was waiting to turn left onto my street. Traffic was a bit backed up as the intersection is very close to the freeway onramp at Mission St. in SB. The woman waited...then inched forward...then was apparently *waved on* by someone in one of the opposing lanes. The other lane was hard to see (I've made that turn hundreds of times myself) and usually not safe to turn through, but she did anyways.

The woman began to drive through her turn and as she did I saw a blue Ford Explorer coming down the hard-to-see lane right at her. I thought to myself, "I see the Explorer, she should, too. Why is no one slowing down?" and everything slowed waaay down. When I lowsided my 600RR back in July, a witnessed a similar slowing of time. Not that everything took forever to happen but rather that I knew what was about to happen and could not move fast enough to change anything. The Explorer hit her front right bumper and her car ricocheted across the lane and slammed into the left rear side of my car. My Civic was pushed up half-way onto the sidewalk, bent/broke both my rear wheels and thoroughly stuff my suspension up underneath the body. Luckily nobody was injured in the crash.

She was making a turn similar to the white truck seen here.

I'm more pissed than anything else. I've had my Civic for 4 years (almost to the day) and bought it with low miles, kept great care of it, and was planning on having it for a long time. The 99-00 Si model has become a bit rare with so many being stolen/wrecked by high school kids/driven into the ground and I loved mine

Insurance is getting an estimate and the agent said it will likely be totalled out. Guess getting a racebike tow vehicle might be in the cards sooner than I thought. Glad I wasn't on my bike this morning!

Ouch bro. Sorry about the Civic. But there was definitely an angel looking out for you, advising you not to take the bike!

Sucks to hear man...but better the Civic than you.

Left turners seems to always follow riders no matter what, eh?

Thanks for the words, guys. Sucks that my EM1 is gone

And ya Herb, gas is expensive up here! That Mobil station is one of the worst in the area, but generally we pay 20-30 cents/gal more up here than back in LA.

At least you made it out alright.

The damage doesn't look too severe...just going to cost money.

No kidding? I'll have to top off before heading up to Santa Barbara. It's like the bay area - more expensive gas, just because. And that's just a Mobil!

Move to Venezuela. You'll be a happy man with gas prices.

Oh, and cagers FEAR riders, so most of the time they get out of your way when lane sharing

Maybe it's time to search for a cheap beater pickup/van for the track?

My vote is for a van with "FREE CANDY" splashed over the side. Dark tinted windows too. Shweet!

I shouldn't complain about gas prices - ****, they're still better than what we were paying a year ago.

Bummer dude, looked like a clean ride. I hate unregulated left turn lanes, there okay in some areas, but near the freeway?

Just heard back from the collision repair guy about the estimate...$7000. He's 99% sure it'll be a total loss which means I'm on the hunt for a truck.

I've been wanting a Tacoma for quite a while now and I found a 2006 Tacoma X-Runner for sale locally. Anyone have suggestions/things to look out for with Tacos?

Tacos are amazing trucks. And they hold their resale value too well.

If you want something less expensive, the Frontiers are good too.

If only the suspension and wheels gave and not the unibody/frame itself, that looks like a very doable rear quarter panel replacement...if you wanted to keep the car. You could also opt just to replace the suspension parts with fairly inexpensive used pieces to get it running as a beater if insurance offers you enough for a tow vehicle. I know the arms on my Del Sol buckled before any major damage was done to the structure itself and it was the cost of the individual pieces and labor for paint that pushed the cost above the salvage value. Of course, finding pieces for a Sol front end is not that easy since they are out of production. However, a rear Civic quarter panel should be much easier.

Yeah, I'd have to check with the body shop to see if the damage was to the unibody or just the suspension components. Body shops usually quote insurance companies much higher than what an individual could do the work his/herself for. The motor and tranny are in excellent shape, I honestly drove it like a grandma. I thought about posting it in the classifieds to see if someone wants a good B16a2 swap. Damn...makes me sad.

Sorry to hear about the wreck! I almost got taken out by some girl in a Scion TC this morning who lost control (single car accident) and spun right into the carpool lane.

A little update: the Rep from Geico for the woman who caused the accident said that she is having "serious coverage issues" and told me to read between the lines to understand what that means. Basically, she didn't pay her insurance bill and Geico is likely going to step out on the whole situation. Thank God I have uninsured motorist insurance, otherwise I'd have to take the woman to small claims to have my car paid for. Dammit what a headache!!

Wow.

I never knew that I'd be saying this...but I'm going to definitely add the 'uninsured motorist' on my policy.
