Default rain gutter roof rack attachment

Is it possible to attach a roof rack (Thule or Yakima) via the rain gutters on the Honda Fit? I don't like when the typical Thule/Yakima foot attachments eventually cause tears in the doorjam moldings.

The rubber-covered tracks on each side of the roof are not "rain gutters". They are weld seams that are covered by the rubber strips. If you don't use the feet and clamp mounting systems that are standard with Thule and Yakima racks, your only other option is a permanent mount that requires drilling and bolting through the roof- not a great choice unless you really need the rack on the car all the time.

Your fit has a trunk?

If i were you, I would get a trailer hitch and run a bike rack on the hitch. If you have a sport, the wing will get damaged.

I'm noticing that the trunk rack (you know what I mean) is putting stress on the spoiler. Can you recommend a hitch in particular? Is it hard to install a hitch? Also, with the hitch rack, doesn't that mean I wouldn't be able to open the hatch?

There are about three different hitch brands, and they all seem to come from the same factory- look the same, with names like Hidden Hitch, Reese, etc. How hard it is for you to install the hitch would depend upon your own skill level. Generally not hard, but they are bulky and heavy and are fastened at several points under the car between the rear wheel wells.

Hitch-mounted bike racks in general can be pivoted away from the hatch, which lets you open the hatch without hitting the bike rack, and all of the weight rests only on the bike rack and hitch. Check out the hitches and bike racks at:
www.etrailer.com.

It will cost you more, but your local U-Haul dealer can sell and install the hitch for you.

^^^^

This. It's the better solution for transporting bikes and still keep your MPG's

I'm in the market for a hitch as well and most likely will purchase from etrailers.com

I'm moving cross-country and wanted to tow a 4'x8' UHaul trailer on a hitch. Is towing this trailer a reasonable thing to do with a 2007 Honda Fit Sport?

"Reasonable?". Maybe, but a PITA. Search the fitfreak site for a long, very detailed thread from a guy who also towed a U-Haul trailer cross country from the East Coast to CA. If you have the right experience, it can work, but will cost you wear on brakes and transmission. Plan your routes to avoid high altitudes and long desert drives in summer weather. IMO, you would be better off by renting a moving van from U-Haul and either towing the Fit or having a family member drive it for the move.

The only trailer hitches made for any year Fit is a Class I hitch, with a max. tongue weight of 200 lbs. The U-Haul trailers are heavy empty, and stick up well above the roof height of the car so make for lots of wind resistance. Your max. cargo weight will be fairly small, so a trailer move with a '07 Fit would take a LOT of forethought. If you are not experienced in trailering now, a cross country move would not be the best way to learn. You may need a new car after the trip.

Roger that. I read a little more online and decided against towing a trailer across the country. Anyway, I bought a hitch for a bike rack.
Thanks for the tips.

You're welcome. Good luck with the move- you will like the improvement in weather out here but won't like the traffic or the drought.
