Opinions on chirping sound from '08 Fit
I'm an original owner of a 2008 Honda Fit which now has 117k. It's been dealer maintained for every oil change, service, etc. Recently, I started working for a new company that is roughly 35 miles from my house. 99.9% of my commute is stop and go traffic (typically 1.5 to 2 hours each way). I'm on my original clutch which still engages fine. However, lately I've been hearing a chirping noise from the engine area. My first assumption was a pilot bearing or accessory belt. I was suspicious of the serp belt since I just had it changed at 90k. In fact, I remember it quite well because it cost a lot more than I was expecting ($200!). I've changed a million serp belts in the past, but those were RWD vehicles with automatic tensioners. I read the DIY after receiving the quote and to be honest, I just decided to pay up. Time isn't on my side with my daily family routine and a small business that I run on the weekends.
Ok, back to the issue. My chirping noise is driving me insane in traffic. The dealer is no longer convenient to my location, so I chose an independent shop near my home. I dropped the car off this morning for someone to diagnose. I received a call a few hours later that it's my pilot bearing. The strange thing is that a common pilot bearing chirp usually disappears when you push in the clutch. That isn't happening with the Fit. The sound is always there unless you push on the accelerator. When the gas pedal is pressed, the sound goes away. The sound is always there in idle, pressing the clutch down, or anytime that you're not accelerating the vehicle with the gas pedal. I explained this to the shop but they are determined to convince me that it is the pilot bearing and that I should just replace the entire clutch kit. I agree that the original clutch is probably near the end of it's life so it's preventative at this point.
And now to the quote. $1,100.00! I told them I needed to do some research and I picked the vehicle up this evening. So what does everyone else think? Have you experienced a similar symptom or have mechanical feedback?. I spoke with another shop who would allow me to buy my own clutch kit, and only charge me $550.00. I found the Exedy kit for a reasonable cost, but I want to confirm the issue.
