FIVE GRAND!?!?!?! ARE YOU INSANE?! This thing is 15 years old!!!

anyways....great vehicle. Engine is from an integra, chassis is from a civic, awd is from...well, nothing, but it works pretty good. Make sure all the fluids are changed and the timing belt/water pump have been changed. The timing belt/water pump is an expensive procedure and its past due at that point. Get it checked out by a known reliable mechanic.

i hope not! lol. Rear abs sensors are bad on these things too, but if the lights not on its either fine, or unplugged.

mine Blue Books for $5,800 and its a 2000 with 238K. the bluebook range for a 1st gen CRV is $4000-9000 in good condition. On a side note, a 2001 SE with less than 100k blue books for $10,000

also make sure to have your valves checked/adjusted every 30k or so. major issue with burnt valves but other then that theyre solid cars! ive got just over 200k and i LOVE it!. i paid 3300 for mine, clean title and smogged and mine was a EX with all options. id offer them 3500 and see where that gets ya. if not just browse craigslist.

Just recently bought mine with 205XXX miles. I paid $2700 for it. The struts were all blown and the sway bar bushings and endlinks all needed replacing. The rear differential for the 4WD was also moaning but I changed out the fluid and it went away.

I also replaced the timing belt, water pump and did a valve adjustment and a tune up on it. I flushed and replaced the transmission fluid. A few days later I drove it from Virginia to Pennsylvania without a hitch.

They seem like very reliable cars. I've only owned mine for 2 months but I love it so far. The thing has very high miles but drives very smooth. For a transmission with over 200K on it It shifts as though it were new.... hondas, got to love them.

make sure records indicate valve adjustments!!!!!

other than that, they're pretty bullet proof if regular maintenance has been performed.

Thats pretty much going price for that mileage (looks like 126K). People want gold for these things and the blue book supports them on it so good luck. Here's some on CL near you if you are in SC

Common issues are first gen CR-Vs are:

  • clock doesn't work (can be fixed easily with a soldering iron and about 10 minutes of your time)
  • Burnt valve (keep them adjusted and you should be ok
  • tailgate latch sticks
  • rear driveshaft U-joints go bad and aren't sold seperately (any good driveshaft shop can enlarge the holes slightly and put a different U-joint in there though)
These things really don't have a lot of major issues. They're very solid reliable vehicles for the most part. I would try to get a '99 - '01 though for the extra 20hp.

I paid over $7k for my 1998 over a year ago. I have double that into it now though haha... If the car seems worth it then buy it - if it's not then walk away. It's really that simple.

I buy and sell these rigs for fun, they are great cars. At insurance auction I find usually front end damaged cars at a price I can't afford, how they can buy at 3k-4k, fix and sell them at a profit is beyond me. I usually go to the want ads and spend 1k-3k, fix the issues (usually 3 or 4 consisting of check engine light, fuses, suspension noises and the like), and resell at 4k-5k. Remember you make your money on the purchase, not the sale. Be vigilant and patient and the right deal will be found. P.S. don't tell your daughter the front seats fold down flat.

We inherited my wife's mom's 97 CRV. Great car except for the burnt valve I replaced myself about two years ago. I'm due check the valve adjustment again, now that I know about this issue. It's got about 190k miles, and a couple of problems currently. First, a wandering idle RPM that I've found good info on at this site, but not got around to fixing yet. FYI: Don 't buy new IACV (Idle Air Control Valve) too quick ($200 - $300), as they can be cleaned & checked and aren't usually the culprit.

The other problem I'm in the process of trying to figure out. It's got slack in the drive train such that it will buck or knock when the car's speed and engine speed "coincide," i.e.; when neither accelerating nor slowing through decompression. I've been looking for info on this online before I crawled under it. If anyone has any input on this I'd appreciate it, though I suppose I should be starting a new thread.

I am curious how much it costs to have the valves adjusted? I got a 97 CR-V from my Dad who passed a few months ago with a whopping 27,000 miles on it! That's right 27k. He just used it for grocery shopping. I know the valves have not been done. The car has a tapping noise coming from the rear drivers side while holding down the brake. Once you take the foot off the brake no tapping noise. Other than that it's a cream puff, it never had a repair.
