99 CRV 4WD, various problems wanting input.
I bought a 99 CRV 2.0L AWD 5spd.
Overall good, EX with roof rack package, 270,000kms with minimal rust. Unknown maintenance schedule.
Problems area:
- Rear diff makes noise when I turn tight corners (backing up is bad) or engage 4wd. I saw a youtube video is a guy who did a fluid swap and it seemed to make things better. I'm wondering what's the best fluid? Factory recommends the old CVT fluid, but I'm sure after 12 years there is a more modern OEM fluid.
- Severe oil leak from the crank pulley side of the engine. It's bad. Never rebuilt that area of an engine before. Anyone know if it takes to rebuilt the oil pump freshen the seals on that side of the engine?
- Engine shudders. Occasionally the engine will misfire and the engine will shudder, then it seems to pick up again. I did a basic tune up. Mostly new electricals. Wires are reused but they were still in decent shape. Not sure what it is. Engine is dirty inside. I hear valves can be an issue and the blocks are weak. Wondering if it's best to just find a fresher B20 and swap that in? What's the best rated B20 I can use? Should I just put a GSR and have more fun?
-Clutch feels odd. I've had hydraulic honda clutches before but this one's different. The clutch feels heavy and engages in about a 3/16" of pedal travel from full release to full engage. Never seem to be able to nail it consistently. It feels so unforgiving. Someone mentioned that's a symptom of a worn release bearing...seemed to make sense?
I'm new to CRVs and haven't been working on cars for a good bit now. If any CRV veterans can shed some light on some of these issues it would be very appreciated. Thanks.

1. Honda Dual Pump II Fluid. Change it, it'll fix it.
2. lots of work.
3. My b20 does the same thing. Compression checks out on mine, changed everything in the ignition system. Cant figure it out, and im a mechanic. Dont really care, because im swapping the motor when my new one is built.
4. Thats how CRV clutches are. Weird eh? Get used to it. lol
