The engine is out of a 2005 Honda Element.

After nearly 300k I finally had an issue.

Burnt Valve. Removed the head. Had all the Exhaust Valves replaced.

Then the install of the cams....

So when I put the cams in place I made sure that the cams were facing up (as per the manual).

Manual DID NOT specify at the point to make sure things were at TDC.

The cams fall into place into the journels. Then I tightened down per specs.

The manual (step 2) of the cam chain installation shows the following diagram.



My cams are a bit off because when settle into the journel the cam lobes cause them to turn.

(step 2) Says to make sure that cams are at TDC.

How do I safely turn the cams to TDC once that are on the heads and rockers caps bolted down? If I turn the cams to much the lobes will cause the cams to do a 1/4 turn.

I am about 1/4 inch off from TDC.

Make sure the crank is at TDC before lining up the cams. After that, it's a bit of a pain to line up everything. Ideally you'd want a second person available to help. Even better would be to have the motor out of the car. Using a wrench, start with 1 camshaft and turn until the hole on pulse plate lines up with the hole behind it. Insert a drill bit to hold the camshaft in place. Do the same with the other camshaft. The marks on the cam gears should now be close. Have your buddy turn the camshaft(s) until the marks line up and then proceed to install the timing chain.
