Default Diesel 2.2 CDi Hesitation

I have a CRV 2.2 Exec with 178,000 miles on the clock year 2006.

Recently it has started to hesitate slightly when driving at constant low speed say 30/40 mph. It is if I have taken my foot off the throttle momentarily. I have noticed it seems to be worse in the wet.

quite annoying but only the driver can really feel it. However I am shortly to take the car on a 3,000 mile round trip on the continent and worry that things might get worse.

My thoughts include the air mass meter which I did clean up a few months ago which seemed to alleviate the problem to some extent but it has come back.

Any ideas greatly appreciated

Yes the car is regularly maintained with full history.

The air filter has been changed recently as has the diesel filter, about a year ago.

The erg pipework and associated bits and pieces were cleaned out about 2 years ago.

Very recent oil change.

Update 17/5/16

I stripped out the air mass meter sensor and cleaned it up with an erg cleaner. I also blew some down into the air intake manifold with the engine running; loud pop and the engine stopped which I don't understand. However, no damage done.

I also, just to complicate matters, took the cover off the throttle housing and noticed a bit of slack in the cable coming onto the electronic unit, say 1/2" at the centre of the span. There is adjustment on this cable so I tightened it up so that the slack has almost disappeared. Less play at the pedal end too.

Well, the hesitation seems to have good as gone away. Car running fine although I have not tried it in the wet yet. Can't say which of my two changes have made the difference.

Just a quick tip to anyone who has tried to remove this sensor on the diesel. It looks as if it should come straight out, but it is too long. Therefore you have to loosen off the air filter housing, which is a bit of a s-d. It pulls up at the back out of some rubber bushes (only one bolt at the front) to make this easier remove the engine cover. Once done, you can wiggle the air filter housing to one side sufficiently to pull the sensor out although it is still tight against the brackets for the throttle housing which are immediately above the sensor when properly positioned.

Still intrested in any thoughts? I will let you l know how I get on during my trip to Sweden.

Hi I thought I should let you know how I got on. First thing to say is that she went round western Europe without a hitch, but the hesitation is still there when you first get going. Once the engine is really hot it seems to disappear and I did get her really hot in a massive traffic jam in Berlin, with the out side temperature reading 30*, thank god for the air con, anyway the car did not miss a beat even though we drove at least two miles at less than walking pace which took over an hour.

It was only when we got back to the UK that I drove again in the wet and yes the hesitation is still there even when the engine is hot. It isn't too bad but it is noticeable which is irritating, even the Mrs has noticed it and asks me if I have taken my foot off the throttle.

So any ideas to the cause would be most welcome, could it just be old age? Incidently she burns no oil even when driving all day at 80-90 miles an hour (In Germany of course).

Next trip is off road in the Auvergne for a week in September, I might get the engine remapped for this, maybe that will cure it?
