Default CRV P1457

So my recently aquired 2002 Honda CRV threw the code P1457. Through reading on this forum and other places I made the decision to change out the Canister Vent Shut Valve to fix the issue. There is lots of info on what to do, but I did not find much on how to do it. So I decided to provide a brief documentation of the process I went through.

Step 1 was to raise the rear of the CRV, I use ramps and backed it up on those.
Step 2 was to remove the lower shield over the canister system, three 10mm bolts to remove it.
Step 3 was to remove the hoses and the wiring connector from the valve and the canister. Three of the hoses simply pull off, the one to the tank you have to squeeze on the tabs and pull it off.
Step 4 I removed the canister from the vehicle. there are two 12 mm bolts in the back of the canister, and one 12 mm bolt in the front, between the solenoid and the gas hose connection box on the canister. I used a short extension on a deep well 12 mm socket with my 3/8" drive to get to it.

Now the canister will drop out for easy access to the two small screws that hold the valve to the canister. These two screws are the toughest part of the project.

I had to use my dremel to cut slots for a straight head screwdriver in them. That got one out, the other I had to cut the head off the bolt. Then I grabbed the stub left after removing the valve with locking pliers. Unfortunately, the fitting in the plastic the screw goes into turned with the screw. I ended up drilling out the screw and re-tapping the hole. I then bought 10mm long 5mm-.8 thread screws with locking washers and plain washers to put on them.

Assembly was pretty simple and revers order.
