CRV lift kit or bigger tires? off roadin

Re: CRV lift kit or bigger tires? off roadin
What's up lil' Honda dudes and Dudettes!
I joined this forum because of this thread. I currently have a '97 CRV awd, auto tranny that I got an itchin' to mess with. My vehicular background comes from Jeeps- I've owned and built several including 4 Wrangler YJ's, 2 Cherokees and 1 Grand Cherokee that is my current ride. With the exception of 1 of each, I've lifted, locked, modded to the hilt all of them. My Grand is a '97 Laredo with the 4.0 straight 6 cyl. It is a gas HOG!
Even with only 235/75/15's on there and no lift.
My step son has been driving the CRV, but I'm trading him out this weekend -to his dismay. Too bad.
Anyway...Having come from 20 years of lifting and off-roading Jeeps, I'm not into 4 wheeling like I used to be, but I still want a capable vehicle to get to the backwoods.
I think that a 2" lift and some semi-aggressive tires are the way I'm going with the CRV. There are NO modded CRV's around here at all, and no one has any idea of what's available for them, which led me here.
I see the OME lifts are available for it- I've ran OME on the Jeeps...:thumb up: I got into them when they first started importing them and marketing them heavy here in the US back in the early 90's. Everything about them are top-notch. They're made in Australia; the steel they use, the shot-peening, the scragging, etc make them superb to any other spring maker. Ditto on the shocks. They're big-time spendy, but the ride quality, flex and durability are worth it.
What I'm going to try, though, is the 'spacer' trick. I'll have to get under it and do some measuring, but there's gotta be some polyurethane spacers out there that would work.
It's got 120,000 miles on it, so I'll do new shocks anyway-
A couple of questions though, from those who have lifted them:
1. Is there any steering issues lifting these? With the Jeep, depending on height, you need to deal with control arms, trackbars, pitman arms, etc...
2. What about driveline vibrations? Again, with Jeeps, longer driveshafts, transfer case/tranny lowering kits are needed to fix the vibrations from the out of line driveline.
3. To the rear- any problems there?
4. What kind of hit does the MPG take when lifting a couple inches and going with a little bit taller tire? The last thing I want to do is kill the gas mileage on it.
Thanks guys! I look forward to getting active here and sharing along the way!

stock crv springs wont work on the coilover sleeves...you have to use coilover sleeve specific springs because they are flat on the top and bottom, where the stock crv springs are not.
but yes, swap the stock crv springs for 10" long, 2.5" ID, coilover springs...and you've got the right idea
I have to get my box of springs/struts out of storage this weekend, so i will try to remember to take some pics in the next few days to show the difference between stock civic springs/struts and crv springs/struts. along with some 6" long coilover springs I have, so that we all have a visual of whats being talked about here...

the key IMO is to find a seller that is selling lots of them. usually race teams will have pairs, but only list them as singles. i've always been able to find 2 of the same rates, individually. also by finding 2 from teh same seller allows you to save on shipping (if you contact them first lol)
Like this for instance...this seller has LOTS of different springs for sale, several in the same rate, by the same MFG.
http://stores.ebay.com/unit9/_i.html...rch&_sid=58622

came from that seller, it may looks worn out but ive been using several set in two of my Vs
for 2yrs now and still doing great, i just buy a bit higher spring rate for my spec to compensate
for the difference since it was used or may have been worn out....
ill post up pics once my struts/shocks arrive, hopefully in the next 2 weeks it wont snow yet!

Thanks for the reply , fast2cam. Another thought. Can I get civic coil overs and use the civic springs? I could possibly put another sleeve under the threaded coil over sleeve. That would raise the threaded sleeve up the strut. Does that make sense? And do you think it will work? Basically, I wanna use the civic coil over setup but just use a spacer around the struts to raise the sleeves...
spring than the civic/tegs 8" if im not mistaken, as for connecting another sleeve i could work
but you might have issue w/ the stability of the connection.. the safest way to this is to get
a longer spring or if you can find a longer sleeves it might do the heigt difference...
one thing im thinking was adjusting the spring perch or put something stable enough to hold
the coilover sleeves to make it a bit higher...

yeah I didnt think about that...but it does sound like it would be unstable. the sleeve would be up the strut more and therefore probably wouldnt have enough support since most of the threaded sleeve would probably be up around the strut shaft...not good especially with all the vehicle weight on the spring too...
It sounds like im gonna get the civic coilovers and purchase some springs. So i need 10" length and 2.5" inner diameter for sure?
and i will check into what spring rate i'll try to get too...

Re: CRV lift kit or bigger tires? off roadin
ok I've looked at some coilover kits for the crv. it looks like they use a 650# spring rate for front and 375# spring rate in the rear on the ksport lowering coilover kits i saw. would I do the same spring rates if I'm looking to buy the 10" springs? I found a 625# and a 400# spring on ebay. The 625# would go on front right? and 400 in rear. I have no clue about spring rates and what I would need....

...following up here- I really need to get new tires on here pretty quick. What do you guys recommend for an aggressive looking tire that will still give me good road manners and mileage? What size should I go with if I'm keeping my stock alloy wheels?
Thanks!
Thanks!

Re: CRV lift kit or bigger tires? off roadin
did you find a way to lift your CRV? if you're leaving it at stock height, you could do a 215/75-15 or 225/70-15 max on your stock wheels

Re: CRV lift kit or bigger tires? off roadin
May do the OME springs...spacers at the least; but the tires are in bad shape and need those before I would even have time to lift it...

the 215/75-15's sit about 27.7" tall. alot of people use those on stock height, but it just seems like they're too big and you may get a little rubbing.
the 225/70-15 sit about 27.4" tall. I see less people on forums using those but they say they fit and they are not as tall as 215/75....just wider.
lastly, the 215/70-15 sits about 26.9" tall. the stock tire size is 205/70-15 which sits at a measly 26.3"
I was using 215/65-16 when i had 16" wheels and those stand at 27". Those fit on my crv with no problem at all.
let me know what you decide, because I'm in the same boat as you. I have 15" wheels now and i need tires. I cant decide what size i want either....

yeah you have options on tires for your stock wheels. you can do 215/70-15, 225/70-15, or 215/75-15. I listed those from small to large.

I'm leaning towards the 215/70/15's...a little 'shorter' but I don't want to kill my gas mileage; the 215/75/15's are another inch in diameter...
The Yokohama Geolander AT/S are in this size and look pretty good...

Re: CRV lift kit or bigger tires? off roadin
I just had Firestone Destination AT's put on, in the 205/75/15...perfect!
not too wide, not so tall as to kill my mileage and acceleration, but definitely looks good on there.
Pics up in a bit...
