Ac repair and engine issues

Ac repair and engine issues
Hello: I own a 2004 Honda CRV with 108,000 miles. About 5 months ago, we had an AC repair done and the car hasn't been right since. We paid about $1500 to have the AC almost completely replaced, including the compressor. Since then, whenever we are speeds of about 60 mph or higher and the AC is on, there is a drag on the engine. It feels like someone's lightly tapping the brakes every few seconds at random intervals. There are also knocking noises near where the compressor is.
I've taken the CRV back to the shop several times and they can't figure it out, nor can they replicate it, because they don't take it out at higher speeds. About six weeks ago, they adjusted the compressor clutch and slightly decreased the amount of freon. This worked until this past weekend, which happens to be the first time it's gotten really hot and we were out in the middle of the day...so the AC had to work harder.
Frankly, I'm tired of going back to the shop for something they can't figure out. Have any of you experienced anything like this with your Hondas?

Re: Ac repair and engine issues
the a/c will typically cause a decrease in speed or a hesitation just due to the added load on the engine but that is just a characteristic of having a tiny 4 cylinder engine pushing 4000lbs of steel down the road at 88ft/s and then demanding it simultaneously compress a pound of refridgerant to 300psi as quickly as possible. sucks not having the torque of a larger displacement engine..
..but if it is really that terribly bad, keep taking it back to the shop. have them change the compressor out, idk. ****. how bad is the noise? maybe the compressor is having issues.. but normally they do tend to make a bit of noise.

Take it to another shop, " they don't take it out at higher speeds" is BS. Why not?
Then you take them out at higher speeds. Take the tech for a drive and show him exactly the problem your having. They screwed the pooch somewhere and are just puttin you off.
It should not "knock" and yes, while you feel a little more load on the engine, it should not be like you describe.
Something is still not right. They need to fix it. YD

similar problem.
2003 crv.
idle drops way down & engine feels like its going to stall when ac compressor engages when car is stopped in drive or park.
it only happens when vehicle warms up & ac is on for a bit.
i suspect idle air control but no check engine light so possibly ac compressor is failing & creating too much drag...but ususlly they fail and just have poor compression. hmmmm

Not saying this issue is what is happening to you, but i just wanted to throw this out there.
After i alleviated some pressure , the idle went back to normal with the a/c on and it started to blow ice cold air . Now the compressor cycles on for about 3 minutes , then off for about 15 seconds when the fan in the cabin is at 1/2 speed and it blows ice cold air to the point my glasses fog up when i step outside , and my hands freeze while driving ...
hee hee, gotta love a/c in august on a hot florida day

Re: Ac repair and engine issues
Hello, I am a new member and so I can't start my own thread so I found a thread that was the most similar on this forum. Perhaps someone can help:A/C compressor on all the time
I am trying to fix is that the A/C turns on as soon as the car turns on regardless of if the cabin fan is running or not. Turning on the fan and clicking the A/C toggle switch in the cabin on ofcourse makes no difference. I have checked to see if relays are stuck and they are not. The condenser Fan(by the engine fan) and the compressor clutch get voltage all the time so the A/C is running super cold. I am impressed with just how cold it is running considering the condensor fan is dead and needs replacing. For now I actually turn the heat on and run the fan so it does not freeze my evaporator in the cabin or damage it too much.
I don't think it is the A/C or DEF toggle switches in the cabin because it is on regardless of whether the fan is on or not, and those toggle switches in the cabin don't activate anything til the fan is on.
Could it be a bad ecm who has had an identity crisis after 285K? Anybody know where it is and what to look at?
The A/C ofcourse works "well" as it is on all the time. Though feeling can't be good for my compressor or milage. Any help will be appreciated.
Thank you!!!![/QUOTE]

Re: Ac repair and engine issues
OK the plot thickens a bit here. So today I noticed that if I turned my temperature control in the cabin from hot to cold and back and forth the compressor would try to temporarily disengage making a quick click click click sound before it resumed to stay engaged. So I am starting to theorizing that there is a short in the control module in the cabin that is sending strange signals to the computer/ecu. Any ideas other than trying to change that?
