AC compressor noise in '04 Element

AC compressor noise in '04 Element
A whiny noise, like an electric drill, started coming from the A/C compressor on my O4 Element when the A/C is turned on or cycles on. The noise increases in volume with engine rpm. I suspect the A/C clutch-pulley bearing or the compressor bearing.It only makes noise when the A/C is engaged so I suspect the A/C compressor bearing.
However, I've read that 90% of the time its the A/C clutch-pulley bearing and would prefer to not have to open the system by replacing the entire unit if I can avoid it.
Is there away to rule out one or the other?
