I just got a recall notice and approved warranty extension for my 2010 CR-V. Honda states that they are experiencing sticking piston rings on 2010-11 models and will extend the warranty to 125,000 miles or 8 years. Mine is only 5 years old, but has 181,000 on the ODO so I'm SOL for the extended warranty. I have been experiencing excessive oil consumption for the last 80,000 miles. I now use a qt every 1,000miles. No noticeable smoke from the tailpipe though. I've also noticed a drop off in MPG. Used to get 28-30 on the highway and now I'm down to 22-24. Big question...
can I free these up with some Marvel Mystery Oil or other moose juice? What is the fix that Honda uses in the dealership? It can't be too difficult since they said tha the fix would only take 2 days.

i don't understand...you got a recall notice and the approval for an extended warranty. Go inquire about them BOTH and see what they say. If your local Honda dealership refuses to provide the recall part and replacement, or the warranty, than call HQ and get the ball rolling because if you're gonna sit here and wait for someone to answer you than it will be too late by then.

The fix is replacing the affected rings. A lot is involved in the procedures...

I would still take it in to get fixed, why prolong. I rather not have the same mishap with my sisters rav4 when she had the piston ring issue.

I received the same letter. I have a 2011 CRV-SE which is also included in this piston ring warranty extension. I contacted my local Honda dealer's service dept. and they want me to come in for an oil change "...with a HONDA filter..." and then go back after 1,000 miles to see if any oil is gone. They better not have me going back for a ton of compression tests!

Told me I have to pay for oil change $44.95 WITH coupon and I would be reimbursed IF it is determined that the piston ring work is required.

I have all the receipts from oil I purchased since this excessive oil consumption began. Also have receipts from my local garage for every oil change they did.

Dealer had better not tell me that problem is because a "...HONDA filter..." was not used. OR that the incorrect oil was used. My local garage guy took care of the 2004 CRV I bought new for the 10 years I owned it, so I KNOW that this issue with my 2011 is not anything that he did.

I asked dealer how long it would take to repair piston issue IF the work had to be done. Are you all sitting down???? Told me it would take ABOUT A WEEK. Who is going to pay for a rental vehicle so I can get to work?????

My appointment for oil change is this week. I have a bad feeling that this is not going to go well. Also...I cannot see a "dealership" service department doing the kind of work involved with piston ring job.

One more thing. I have been searching all over the web/forums/etc. about this letter and have found hardly any info from CRV owners about it. This is the first place anyone has said anything.

I hope other chime in with their experiences on this.

You'll have to regularly check the oil level after this oil change for the oil consumption test. If the oil level approaches the lower mark on the dipstick, return to the dealer. If it is not possible to return to the dealer, then you must add the recommended oil and keep proper records of the amount of oil added, the mileage, and the before and after oil levels (a form will have been given to you as part of the scheduled oil consumption test).

For engine oil consumption test, if oil consumption is 1 quart of more every 1,000 miles, they will follow normal troubleshooting procedures first (e.g. no external leaks, etc.) before seeking approval from the Honda District Parts and Service Manager (DSPM) to proceed with warranty work.

There may be other factors causing excessive oil consumption not covered by the extended warranty related to the piston rings; for example: no external leaks, or any loose or disconnected breather hoses, whether car is operated normally (no trailer pulling, no excessive engine revving, maintenance done on schedule, etc.).

The dealer has repair technicians, with proper equipment and tools to do the piston ring replacement. There were service bulletins issued regarding it.
