i have seen on here how to replace the fuel pump but what about the sending unit?

when i bought it 2 months ago i noticed that once the gas gauge gets to about a 1/4 tank the needle drops to empty. the salesman said that the gas light would come on, not to worry about it. well, as you can guess, the gas light doesn't work either.

took it to the dealership and they said i needed a new fuel pump and a new sending unit and that would fix both problems. my problem is i can't afford $1100.

where is the sending unit and how do i change it? plus, i've seen where it says to release the pressure when replacing the fuel pump, how do i do that?
