Re: 1st Gen CRV Alternator Removal
Just wanted to update this..... I was able to do it with out any type of major work. What i did was remove the power steering line from the pump I also needed to remove 1 bracket that holds the wiring harness to the chassis. Then I was able to barely squeez the alternator through the top.
Just in case anyone else needs to do this.
Thanks Honda-tech

Re: 1st Gen CRV Alternator Removal
Glad it worked out for you, I got to this too late. I changed belts on my daughter's '97 yesterday, and had to re-tension them today, so had some insight into the alt. It is a tight fit, but as you saw it can be removed without moving anything else. Now, the belt...blah. Alt is the rear most belt, so you have to remove the serpentine belt to get to it. I found that the only way to do this is to physically unbolt and move the power steering pump out of the way, as the adjusting bolt for the serp is very difficult to access otherwise. And the pivot bolt for the PS pump is right up against a metal line for the PS pump, making it almost impossible to get a socket or ratcheting wrench on that silly thing. A completely crappy design all in all.

I've had the alternator out of my '98 V several times and I found you can remove it without tearing a bunch of stuff apart. You can snake it out along the firewall. The only thing which is a tight fit is the PS line but it will slip past it with some gentle pulling. Just disconnect the switch on the top of the line.

Re: 1st Gen CRV Alternator Removal
HELP! I have top and bottom bolts out and all wiring off but it's stuck in the bottom bracket and won't come out. I tried prying with a crowbar w, a tire iron and a 2x4 it won't budge . Could the sleeve be making it stick if so what do I do? Thank you

I have a Honda CRV LX 4wd 2000
Have you tried using a bottle jack and pump it up against the alternator just to make sure it isn't corrosion welded to the frame?
And, by the way everyone, I lost an alternator belt due to evil squirrels.
I had a lot of corrosion and the "through" bolt broke on the power steering pump.
Can anyone please tell me what bolt I need to replace with?
The bolt that snapped is the bottom bolt on the power steering pump that allows it to swivel.
I read that I needed m8 x 1.25 , threaded flange 12mm, but I haven't found a bolt that looks right yet.

That was VERY helpful, thank you noodle man...
You can always tell people that have OCD about their post count.
I have access to ALLDATA and it does not specify a part number for those bolts, that is why I asked on the honda-tech forum.
Do you have any other helpful advice?
