1998 CRV with VTEC
Been a lurker and bought a CRV off of a member.
I have a 1998 CRV that when I purchased it it had had a VTEC conversion done on it.
I believe it is the original block with the VTEC head.
Everything was fine for approx 2000 miles, then the harmonic balance came loose one day on the way home from work, drove it 10 miles to the house.
I thought I had just popped off a belt, didn't notice the balancer until I got it in the garage.
It ruined the balancer but the crank was fine.
I replaced it and put in a new key in it.
Put everything back together. BTW those belts are a pain LOL
After starting and running it I noticed a noise.
I tracked it down to the timing belt rubbing on the belt cover.
This has just started since I put the new balancer on.
What do I need to do to get it back in line.
The belt gear was still in the crank as well as a single big skeletonized washer.
Is this correct?
I had it up for sale before the balancer issue, but now I need it badly for a car for the wife until i get back from a business trip.
Thank you for your help!!
KJ

Re: 1998 CRV with VTEC
did you put the washer back on to where the curve faces away from the belt so the washer doesn't dig into it?
did you check to see if the timing belt cover was damaged by the falling off balancer?
Also, check over the car for properly torqued bolts. that balancer should be torqued to 130ft/lb I'm not sure how it can just fall off unless the previous owner didn't tighten it enough.

Re: 1998 CRV with VTEC
The washer and balancer was still on it, just loose enough the keep came out and the acc. drive belts came off.
The cover looks fine. I am wondering because the balancer was loose maybe the tensioner is loose?
This is my first experience wrenching on a Honda LOL
I'm pretty sure the previous owner couldn't have tightened it completely.
I did when I put it back.
I took a long 3/8 extension (lubed with dish soap) and lightly pushed on the belt while running.
The belt comes right back to rubbing on the belt cover.
Thanks,
KJ

the only thing i can think off is indeed the big washer on the crankshaft that is missing. Not the one behind the bold but the one between the cover and the belt.

just checked the shop manual and the crankshaft gear has to be placed with the slanding side towards the engine and the big washer with the slanding side towards the chassis otherwise the cam belt runs off touching the cover

Re: 1998 CRV with VTEC
Sorry, been super busy.
I will double check the washers.
The belt never "walked" before and I never removed it when I replaced the balancer.
Quite baffling since it was fine before the harmonic balancer came loose.
Thank you for the help

DO IT ON ALL FOURS
Re: 1998 CRV with VTEC
It is called a Timing Belt GUIDE... You should have 2 of them if you don't have a crankshaft position sensor (which you shouldn't on a '98). IF it had the the CPS then you would have the GUIDE built into the reluctor ring for the CPS.
Most of the time when the belts wants to walk off it is due to being over tightened.
