1998 CRV Power Steering pump help.
I have this crazy metallic noise on startup, that goes away couple minutes later when car warms up. Noise seems to be really coming from powersteering pump, and depending on Temperature can go away completely in a minute (around 40 F) or 6-10 minutes ( below 32 F)
Sound is metallic, like dry wheel bearing.
I have a suspicion its my power-steering pump. Also there is slight change in the noise when I turn steering wheel but I am not sure if it the fact of turning steering wheel or change in RPM's.
Any ideas.
I found following rebuild kit and parts, did anybody successfully rebuild that pump ?
PS: Rebuild kit for 1998 Honda
Seals 06531-s10-003
Pump Main Bearing 91048-P2A-003
Intake Hose o-ring part number 91345-RDA-A01 (not sure if this one reflects TSB)
O-ring for Output Hose (High Pressure) 91370-SV4-000
Output hose (High Pressure) with O-ring, 53713-S10-505

Most rebuild kits are to correct leaky pumps by providing new seals. If there is fluid in the pump, and its making these noises you ought to consider replacing the pump entirely. The good news is B series pumps are abundant on the used market. I am actually running a CRV PS pump in my type R. Granted it did require modification. Hit craigslist/ebay and look for a used B20 ps pump. I paid $20 for mine. Good luck

Make sure its the pump and not the idler pulley. My idler pulley sounded similar to yours, and they are only about 30 bucks. If it has never been changed then it's not a waste of money even if it does not fix your problem. YD

You can take the belt off or use any instrument to let your ear hear where its coming from but in the colder months is when the worn pumps tend to go out.
Just a note for you not to waste money on rebuilding your pump when used ones are so readily available. The pumps used in the 96-00 Civics are exactly the same as all our CRV ones and can be had for pennys from craigslist from all the "boy racers" deleting them lol. Theres 2 in my area for $10 a pop.

Re: 1998 CRV Power Steering pump help.
So I got very desperate because car had to be running right after holidays, so my kid can go back to school. I went out and got Napa rebuild power steering pump, only to realize after I brought it home that whoever rebuild it had destroyed bearing seal so that "new" pump would not last a year.
In complete desperation I got one from Junkyard for $40.
While I was trying to get o-rings for hoses, I also purchased an idle pulley, since this thing is under the pump and it felt like good opportunity to change it too.
So after I pulled out pump from car I checked and it had no noise, than I pulled idle pulley and that thing sounded like crap.
Damn
So I replaced idle pulley, returned NAPA pump, I can not return junkyard pump so I will rebuild that one and keep it as spare.
All in all total cost was $80 with junkyard pump. So not bad.
Thanks for all help.
I like that 1998 Crv so much that I am thinking about getting another one.
