Default What to do with D15 motor!! sell it or make a go-kart......

ok well I just got a D15, the bottom end is PERFECT. and was well cleaned too.

it needs a new headgasket and the head may need 2 valve guides fixed. I can fix all of this.

shold I sell it, how much it will be running perfect, I also have accessories like, distributer, alternator, theremostat housing, some mounts, flywheel, clutch (prolly bad need to look at it)

OR

should I buy a welder and start making a go-kart.

I would make a frame for the motor and tranny,

I may do chain drive, but prolly not, an auto tranny would be best, manual wold be fun but since the motor would be in the back the shift pattern wold be wierd.

I would make it with full suspension and wide so that it could corner well (it would have to be wide anyways to fit the motor,

also would have huge wheels, well the stock car wheels but that would be HUGE for a go-kart.

I know this would take a LONG time to do, but I am build a 10 foot by 17 foot concrete floor garage to work on things and this could be one of them when my ef is not in there.

Do youhave ay idea how much work it would be to make a go-kart out of that engine?

Imagine ALL that **** you'd ave to make and engineer.

yeah I already know, that's why I am thinking about just selling the motor.

I strongly believe I could do it though,

but i do like the thing above,

just slam it and make some body panels and it would be pretty close to a go-kart.

Yeah a CRXster is much easier. Don't feel bad though, everytime I pull an engine I think about building something with it.

not to much, it's been done. all you need is to make some mounts, axels, shift linkage, clutch and bam there you go, don't forget the body, i mean it will roll too i have DRIVEN a d16a6 gocart and it catches fifth! make it a two seater also because you could take someonefor a ride plus the wider body

I'll take all the info you can give,

I really didn't want a solid chassis, unless you didn't think the ride was that bad, My friend really wants me to design a full suspension for it, but I don't know if I can do that, the strut towers are really the only thing holding me back.

If anyone else asks, I am not afraid of the engineering part of it, I feel confident in my own abilities,

But if I can not think of something, my friend is going to be going to school next year (he's traveling right now) in florida to be a shuttle engineer for NASA, so I know he could help me out.

I looked on google for thins but couldn't find anything. if anyone has info please provide me with it, thanks.

The cart is made from a black fox two seater, cut in half and added 9 inches in the center, this is where the shifter goes, you'll have to make a rectangular shift box for your shifter and shift linkage to run to, kept full length, it has full rollcage w/ .5 inch plate at the bottom so nothing will hit you when riding, it sits about 4 inches from the ground.

The brake pedal was moved over 4 inches and clutch pedal was installed. runs a simple clutch cable back to tranny beside the left side of the driver. Im not sure about how he got it to go into gear since your sitting infront of the motor. The suspension set up is fanominal, it's very hard to explain but he welded a 5 x 5 plate and took the struts off and Si 89 civic and drilled and dremel'd the holes to exact fit right above the axels, it also has the Si axels. The brakes are little couplings around each axel that close when pressed, NOTICE: added 1/4'' thick steel or some metal rapped around the axel so you would not cut into it and therefor have no axel.

Thats all i know off the top of my head i tried to remember most important things needed, I will have to talk to him more about it since its been a month since i have seen it but not bad for what it is.. BTW IMO on the cart since it weighs nothing really it pulls like hell, the ride is bumpy on the struts since they push up hard w/ wieght thats not there (13in wheels). It grinds alot going into gears but will get vette's.! When riding w/ two people if feels like it wants to tip around harsh corners, the roll cage will work but if you hit something head on your pretty much screwed. The rear is not long enough so i would suggest you add more. When riding at high speed it tends to lift the front up.

--No i don't have any pictures but like i said once i see him again Ill take atleast 100 because i have a d15b and i wan't to do the same thing! have fun!

I hate to tell you, but you are NOT going to get ANY money from a DX motor. ESPECIALLY one that has issues (like yours). So your choices are more along the lines of building your go-cart and giving the motor away.

http://www.git.com.au/~theedge/

These guys sell plans and parts for DIY long travel suspension off road small buggies. Kind of and offshoot of the Honda Pilot/Odyssey. Just looking at the pictures may give you some ideas. I bought and still have some plans myself. I used to have an Odyssey with bigger carb, ported cylinder and pipe. Lots of fun to drive.

If you do it on the cheap the only thing it will cost you is your time. If you enjoy doing stuff like this then why not?

that's cool,

well since I know I can't sell the motor for anything, I gues it is on to the go-kart!

first I need to learn how to weld though, my friend is really good, but he can't do it for me because of where he lives but he could definitly teach me.

I'll post pics when I get it started, prolly won't be until late summer.

BTW meseetree, if you need anything built chassis wise. I have a Tube bender I bought for building roll cages, I could help you fabricate a chassis. I just picked this up about a month ago.

wow, that's awesome, that would definitly make the chassis and roll bars look nice,

how much did you pay for it? (if you don't mind me asking)

also are you located close by for helping me bend the bars, I'll pay you for your time.

I'm in Ohio so it's a bit of a drive. But if you want to come up for a weekend or something wee could bend up all the tube you want. You pay for materials and we'd be good to go. I'd just be glad to help. I paid $800 for it shipped, with a 220deg, 1.5" 5.5" radius die, degree wheel, stand, basicly everything. So as of right now I only have the capability to bend 1.5" but I can get other dies they run around $200 a peice, and 1.5" is all I really need right now.

i was hoping they were only 300-400 bucks.

ohio might be a little far, but i'll definitly pm you in the summer if i can't find someone locally to do it for cheap, (the way gas prices are, it might be more expensive )
