ok, i know that when i put on my sohc vtec head and do the timing that i need to set the crank pulley and #1 piston to TDC. my question is, when the new head comes out of the shop how do i set it to TDC or whatever i'm supposed to set it to??? or does it come the way i should put it onto the block??? i know i can't just put it on because when it's started it might bend valves and what not. Basically how do i set the head so nothing goes wrong???

your helms manual should tell you..

put on the cam gear and line up the marks.
put crank at TDC.
install timing belt.

line up the timing marks on the head,there an arrow on the plastic cover,spin the cam sprocket till the up mark is up,then line up the timing line on the sprocket to the arrow on the cover

i don't have my helms manual on me right now. plus its an a6 block with a y8 head, does that make any difference??? I didn't see any marks on the cam gear thats why i was wondering. can anyone show me a mark on a stock gear??? also if i find out where the mark on the stock gear is what other mark do i line that up with??? is there a mark on the plastic tb cover to align it correctly??? thx for the help.

BTW a pic of a stock cam gear and mark on it would be helpful, i think i see one on mine but i'm not sure.

i dont have a picture of a cam gear, but the stock gears have 2 marks on them, they are across from each other, you put the gear til where it says "UP" is up then you line the 2 marks parallel with the head.. sorry its hard to explain..

ok, i got it all now!!! but one more question, how do i rotate the gear when the head is off the car (as in sitting on my dresser)??? do i crack the bolt on it slightly loose and rotate or what???

What do you mean? There is a small key that holds the cam gear in place on the cam. When lining all the marks up you rotate the cam gear and the cam together. No need to untighten. And depending on how far you need to rotate it you might have to give it some umph to open/close some of the valves to get it positioned right.

with that in mind you may just wanna do head at tdc then do pistons at tdc...don't wanna be bending valves at 1 rpm...people will laugh

well the head is sitting on my dresser in my room. i need to rotate it to tdc but the gear doesn't wanna move??? how do i rotate it???

put some muscle into it... or if you feel like it you can take your valve train off rotate and reassemble beign careful to not move the cam... but thats too much work imo... oh yeah, and i'd set it pretty close before it goes on and then double check it once its mounted... and bring your # 1 piston to TDC before you put the head on... makes life a lot easier...

ok, you just said to take the valvetrain off and rotate it that way but don't move the cam??? that's impossible the gear is attached to the cam. ??

I think he meant don't lift the cam out of the head. Just stick a socket and ratchet on the cam gear nut and tighten. Once the bolt is tight, it will spin the cam gear and cam.
