timing question.
just want to make sure of something... after putting my head back on i never touched the crank pulley. i put the cams in top up notches facing each other. i turned the crank and the tensioner was not fully tightened and the belt skipped... so now I'm having doubts about it because i cannot see the timing mark on the crank pulley because its worn off....
what is the best way to check timing otherwise... what i did was....
i took out the spark plug closest to the cam gears and put a long socket extension in the hole to the piston. cranked the pulley until the piston was at the very top on the compression stroke ( i heard the air escape through the extension) and put the belt back on....
now i think i messed up because i think it has to be TDC on compression stroke on the number 1 Cly. and i think that is the Cly next to the distributor.
i just wanted to clarify i was wrong and if there was an easier way to tell if the timing was correct.
i think i got it back wards but i just want to make sure...
there are like 3 notches on the pulley that look like it could be the timing mark... this is the last thing i need to do before the motor goes back in... yea I'm still pretty new to the whole rebuilding engines but I'm pretty good everywhere else...
thanks

Re: (civichatch9one)
#1 cylinder is closest to timing belt - there are 4 little marks on the crank pulley - the 3 that are close together are for setting the ignition timing, not camshaft timing - there is a 4th mark a little ways to the right of the 3 together - that fourth mark is TDC on the crank for setting the camshaft timing - what engine is this?

Re: (jlicrx)
ok great! the book didnt say anything about that... i saw the three little marks and thought it was just because the pulley hit something because its beatup. (im getting a new one i just want everything running before i start switching out parts) i also saw one that MIGHT have looked like it had white at one time or another... ill go check later. but you said #1 was the one closest to timing belt. then i should be good to go.... thanks!

you cant really see the mark on the crank pulley, you must take the pulley off anyways to put the belt on, but once you take the pulley out, the mark is very obvious on the crank and on the block as well.

Re: (94stockhatch)
yea. i wanted to do that... but... the person before me put in a new timing belt. but fudged the waterpump and just put sealant. so i put in a new head gasket/im gasket/ exhaust mani gasket/waterpump gasket./ oil pan gasket and valvecover gasket with cam seal. and when i went to go take the pulley off it wouldnt go it would spin the crank. i know i prob need that tool. but i dont have it or know someone with it.... the books say to just put the car in gear and pull the ebrake up, but my motor is out...
