Default Timing belt skipping a tooth??

Just a quick question that plenty of people besides myself probably know. OK if your timing belt skips a tooth typically does it advance or retard the timing? And I mean when your like just driving and it happens. I think that it might just be my problem with my idle since I have either checked or changed everything I could (except for the injectors). And also if it did happen to jump a tooth can it be compensated for by adjusting the dist. Or do I need to pull off the timing belt and reposition it. I thought that there is enough adjustment with the dist. but I just want to be sure....TIA!!
