Default Timing Belt/Crank Pulley Bolt

On my '91 Civic DX hatchback, D15B2 series engine,

Im trying to change the timing belt, and I cannot get the crankshaft pulley bolt off. It does not have the hex shape center, it is the old style with holes around the circumference of the pulley.

So far I have broken an 18" breaker bar, as well as 20" extension. Now I have a heavier duty breaker bar, 2 heavy duty 10" extensions, and a 5' steel cheater pipe for leverage.

The problem Im running into now is keeping the pulley from rotating as I try to break that damn bolt loose. This guy devised a pretty good set up, (scroll down to middle of page):

But I managed to bend and break the bolts that are placed in the pulley holes.

I know there is a tool that holds the pulley, also Im considering renting an air compressor and impact gun. Someplace just quoted me for a 5 hp/11 cfm compressor.

Does anyone know if this will cut it? All the threads I read say this bolt is a nightmare!

If I use the impact gun, do I still need to hold the pulley with the tool, or will the gun just break the bolt loose without moving the pulley?

Anyone with experience/suggestions?

The impact gun still may not do it. That bolts a bitch. I'd reccomend either a REALLY good gun, or a big *** pole and a strong breaker bar, and some kinda tool to keep the pulley in place

ya i had this same problem a little while ago, my engine was out of the car so it was slightly easier to work on.

i got some liquid wrench sprayed it on the first few times and hit it with my electric impact (rated for 250ft/lb) and it didnt come off i must of tried 10 times with no luck.

i came back the next day to try it one more time, sprayed the liquid wrench on and hit it for about a minute and it finally came off.

dont think you will need any tool if you are using an impact the crank wont rotate at all, well at least it didnt for me.

give that a shot, liquid wrench is only a couple of bucks and it might just help out.

Same problem here i had to lug the block "I was doing a swap so not that big of a deal" to the shop where my dad works, and we used their compressor and a snap on gun...it wouldnt come off...so we had to tighten...loosen...tighten...and so on...and finally it gave way...

Anyone have experience with the crank pulley holding tool?

Im actually afraid the pulley is gonna break. When I had bolts placed in two holes and a bar fed between the bolts, then against the frame to hold the pulley still, the bolts actually stretched the holes.

So you think the gun will work? How about the compressor rating of 5hp 9-11cfm?

Thanks, any tips appreciated, this thing consumed my whole weekend!

Hey Funkified, I have been using something similar to liquid wrench, thanks.

So your impact gun rated at 250 ft/lbs barely got it off?

Im stuck deciding whether to shell out the $60 to rent a compressor and gun. The strongest one I found as I already mentioned is 5hp 9-11cfm, but if this wont do it, Im wasting my money.

Anyone ever had a pulley itself break? Just worried, when I have the breaker bar and 5' pipe attached, theres an awful lot of torque there.

i know this isnt the same bolt but i just broke my ls bolt loose today. i had o put the car in 5th gear to keep that pully from spinning. might want to try that.

the car is an automatic transmission, so it doesnt make a difference

try to find an electric impact i got mine for cheap at my local hardware store for like $75, it was the best tool investment ive ever made, plus you will own it too!

or just get the crank pulley tool and try it out. if it doesnt work just return it

This is what I have. Ever since buying it, I haven't taken more than 30 seconds to remove a crank pulley bolt.
