Steering Wheel shaking.
I'm having this annoying problem with my steering. When I'm braking at high speeds say like 65mph, my steering wheel shakes like crazy and its become kinda annoying. I just has a axle replaced on the drivers side, but the problem occured before that. The car is completely stock 91 dx sedan. Any suggestions?

Re:
If it's only upon braking sounds like warped rotors. Just get some new ones up front and see how it feels after that. Doesn't cost too much if you know how to do it yourself (real easy).

If it only happens under brakeing and not regular cruising it is your brake rotors. They are warped, I suggest getting new rotors.

Re: Re: (Mach69)
I've been dealing with the same thing lately....
I was hoping it was just my rotors so i replaced those. Of course while i was doing that, i decided to put new pads on it....why not right??
i was pushing the caliper piston in and one of the calipers sprang a leak......
after putting new, calipers, pads and rotors on the car i went for a roll and the problem was even worse
long story short, i've been back to Advance TWICE to finally get rotors that were actually straight but before it was all over, i wound up replacing the bushing in the right side of the steering rack and readjusting the steering gear...
the steering rack stuff took care of what little bit of warped rotor shiznick i had left after getting good rotors on. you can find plenty of info hear about it....

RACK END BUSHING!!!!
heh. yep. you probably have warped rotors, but the uncontrollable shaking is because of looseness in your steering rack. its just a $10 part, everyone should take the time to replace theirs.
just ask realizmpro... i just did his, we didnt replace the rotors, and he said his ride is greatly improved, no more shaking.

tyson,
you get around don't you!
i have to admit, that 10 bucks was probably the best i've spent on the car. not only did it drive better, it made the whole car feel better in general.
it was a pia to get out of the car though. i almost busted it in a million little peices getting it out....

lol. yeah not the easiest thing... im surprised reelizmpro didnt pakc his stuff up and give up on me in the middle of it...
i think A LOT of the complaints ppl have of the "stock" suspension and hope to fix by changing to poly bushings or stiff springs or new shocks, is just because of the bad rack end bushing.
its kinda like brakes. you need to MAINTAIN the system, bring it back to spec by replacing the fluid, bleeding the brakes and whatnot before you say "stock is crap", and then you put big *** rotors on and say "omigod, so much better!" when you could have achieved nearly the same improvement with the stock setup.

you guys have a link to any explainations or DIY?

Re: Re: (crx_88_si)
i don't know of a specific link but if you search "steering rack" on here, you'll find all the info you need eventually.
it's not that hard, all you do is take the right inner tie rod boot clamp loose at the rack and pull the boot back. then, remove the outer tie rod from the spindle and the inner tie rod form the rack and then remove the whole right tie rod assembly (inner and outer still bolted together). then you'll see the white bushing inside the rack. Pull it out with screwdrivers, punches, picks whatever and then tap the new one into place....took a while and it was kinda aggrevating but after you're done, the results are worth the cussing. you don't even need to realign the frontend as long as you take the inner and outer tie rods off together as one peice.
good luck!

Re: Steering Wheel shaking. (Osek206)
I used to own a 2001 Nissan Sentra and started having the exact same problem. It only happened when I was going downhill though at very fast speeds. It would usually happen on the freeway, which made it even worse.
I had the dealership look at it twice, and they couldn't reproduce it. I had tire places check the rotors when I got new tires, nada.
Maybe it was the steering bushing. That would have solved a LOT of problems.

i had the same problem, my solution was wraped rotors and i needed new tires with a new alignment... deff something u wanna get fixed soon before the rotors lock one day when ur trying to stop, not a fun situation.

Re: (Kayla89CRXSi)
i had warped rotors too, but the effects were greatly exaggerated because of the loose rack end bushing. when i replaced the bushing, the uncontrollable shaking went away and i just felt the very mild pulsing of the rotors. replaced the rotors and ride is smooth now. so dont necessarily attribute a shaking wheel to just warped rotors. and also, an existing bad bushing will cause the rotor to warp much faster.

Re: (g-ride-si)
took me hour and a half but i had already had the tie rods off the car and knew which tools to use....i was a mechanic for 10 years so that didn't hurt any either...

Re: Re: (crx247)
I have a 91 civic HB w/a bad rack bushing, as I can see the whole rack rod move inward when I press against the wheel at 3 & 9. The inner tie rod isn't moving, it's the rod connected to it going into the rack.
I'm trying to figure out your description. Disconnect the outer tie rod from the spindle, then pull out the whole passenger side rod assembly? What is holding it in there?

Re: Re: (Hondaisok)
Although, I don't think a bad rack bushing would cause the inner/outer play in the rack. I could see it causing a up and down play.
Anyone rebuilt a rack before?
