Default Rotten Egg Smell = Catalytic Convertor gone bad, correct?

so this horrible rotten egg smell that comes around when sitting at traffic lights on occasion is pissing me off now.

i want to be sure it's my cat before i chop it off for no reason so can anyone verify that the smell i'm smelling IS infact a falty cat?

thanks

car only has 77k

engine was replaced by previous owner and has about 50k.... not sure if they did cat at the same time but either way... it stinks

I'm not in an emissions county so i don't "need" it but at the same time i'm not looking for an excuse to polute the world any more than it already is....

i guess i'm probably going to hack it off and replace it with a resonator though... i can't see dumping a hundred bucks into my beater if i can get rid of the egg smell cheaply while at the same time deapening the exhaust tone.

If you replace the cat with a resonator, it will smell even worse.

i've removed the car on every other honda i've ever had (7+)
i removed the cat from my jeep
none of my old chevy's had cat's holding back the small blocks...

never smelt eggs before

the exhaust tone on a honda gets ricey when you remove a cat and put in a test pipe with most exhaust systems..... which is why i'm planning to replace the cat with a resonator. i was planning on doing some exhaust work anyway so it's not that big a deal.

this is the first time i've ever had a cat smell like rotten eggs though... i can't see that smell coming from the motor so it has to originate in the cat is the conclusion i've come to.... sooooo if i remove the cat how will the rotten egg smell get worse??

-Erik <---- doesn't quite understand what creates this rancid smell in the first place

Could also be a sign of the 02 sensor going bad. Was it replaced with the new engine?

^^ agreed sounds more like the O2 sensor. I think in most cases a bad O2 sensor is what causes the cat to go to ****.

now is it the actually 'gone bad cat' making the smell? Or is it the smell of the raw exhaust gases.

I run a straight pipe and i can smell raw exhaust (smells like my ATV) but in no way would i compare the smell to rotten eggs.

I bet the smell of rotten eggs is comming from the cat being bad and not the smell of the raw exhaust gases. So a resonator wouldnt make them smell worse.

My friends refused to drive behind me with my old car, and I thought it was because they hated me. Get that sucker replaced. Hi-Flo cat is always good. When stuff breaks, thats always a good excuse to upgrade!

Contrary to popular belief, a rotten egg smell from the exhaust is not a sign of a bad cat. Rather, it is a sign of the kind of improper mixture that will ultimately cause your cat to go bad. Before replacing the cat, look into the kinds of problems that can cause improper mixture. Your oxygen sensor could be a cause. But there could be other things. Also keep in mind that if it happens only slightly under WOT, this is not really a cause for concern.

i just filled up and got 39mpg with the last tank of gas so i'm thinkin the o2 sensor is ok... could be wrong though....

as for if the computer is the right computer.... i don't know. as for whether or not the cat is original, i dunno...... i'm gonna hack it off when i do my exhaust in the next couple of weeks.....

we'll see...
