Default Quick Questions for a 88 HF Rex with clutch issues, tranny, clutch/flywheel, and axle questions

basically i have a 88 crx HF, stock HF motor with the oh see well geared HF tranny. my clutch is pretty much gone.

so here are my questions:

1. i heard the clutchs for 88 hf is different cuz of the 20 teeth or spline or wutever count, so i have access to a ridiculously cheap Si cable tranny with a Si clutch, will my HF passenger axle work on the inner part where it goes into the tranny?????

2. are all d series flywheels the same? will i need a Si/DX flywheel with the Si clutch, or can i have my HF flywheel resurface or jus buy a new HF flywheel or use a EG/EK D series flyhweel cuz my friend might have some lying around

thanks! y'all r the best.

You heard *mostly* correctly. ALL the '88 "L3" (as our D-series transmissions are known) transmissions used the 21-spline input shaft, not just the HF. The '89-'91's went to a 20-spline input shaft.

So far as I've ever heard, the HF axle's inner stub WILL go into an HF, DX, or Si transmission. From what I gather, the only reason you can't really use Si axles on an HF, or vice-versa, is because the axles are different AT THE HUB END of the axles. Since you've got HF hubs, I'd think the HF axles would be fine for you.

All D-series flywheels are NOT the same. Honda did a few weird things back in the day, like change the input shaft spline count from 21 to 20 (which *should* really only affect your clutch choices, but bear with me a bit and you'll see how confusing it can all be...), and they also went and changed out the clutch's friction surface area - which in turn affected the FLYWHEEL'S friction surface areas. From what I picked up over the years, it goes something like this:

1988 Civic/CRX: 21-spline input shaft, 190mm friction surface on flywheel.
1989 Civic/CRX: 20-spline input shaft, 200mm friction surface on flywheel.
1990 & '91 Civic/CRX: 20-spline input shaft, 210 or 212mm (?) friction surface on flywheel.

I tend to get a little hazy on those exact friction surface measurements, but there were definitely three different ones used. From all reports I've seen, they kept the flywheels the same from 1990 to at least 2000, so it should be easy to pick one up.

I can tell you really want to put that Si transmission in your HF, and who can blame you? It would do wonders for the car. It won't necessarily be *fast*, but it'll sure as hell feel like it's more awake than a stock HF does...

In general, the *easiest* way to do it is to match the clutch and flywheel to the transmission year. If you have an '88 Si tranny, in other words, you'd be looking for an '88 clutch and flywheel (your '88 HF one would probably work fine, but don't hold me to that; I'm not up on HFs as much as I should be). If you have a 1990 transmission, look for a 1990 or '91 clutch and flywheel, and so on.

Does that help?

Mike
