Default Need Help With CRX Front Brakes HF and SI..

I have a 91 crx hf that i bought a LONG time ago an never changed the brakes.. now its time, im assuming there is just hf brakes on, but at the same time, in order to put a b series into a hf, you need to change the hubs.. an i dont know if he changed the spindles/brake setup while he was at it.. sooo im having a little confusion about the front brakes.. i went to advanced auto parts, all the crx's in 91 have the SAME part number and price for rotors so i bought them for a 1991 HF (my car).. I ordered Hawk pads that work for a 88-89 SI and a 88-91DX.. i figured oh maybe they forgot the HF (noob move on my part) an they should all be the same beings it works on all the others an all other civics 94-00..

so i called hawk an come to find out 91 hf's and 90-91 SI' both have a different part numbers.. my question is... what is the difference between the pads? are the calipers different sizes? .. since hf an si have the same size rotor, can i put si calipers on my spindle with my new rotors and have better braking?

is there a difference to tell between the two to make sure i order the correct hawks this time?

if you have a B series swap then you do not have HF knuckles. there are a number of different knuckles that you could have, with a variety of different brakes. i would start by identifying what you have.

how could i identify which brakes i have?.. if i were to take a guess it would either be hf si or dx brakes.. i already bought 91 crx si brake rotors, i put them on my car, an i put the caliper on an bolted it, an it fits in there perfect.. not too small or too big.. so now i just need to identify the calipers which i dont know if there dx/si/hf .. when i get my pads, im going to try to fit them in.. if they dont fit that means i either have 90-91 si or hf calipers..

yea.. this is the biggest confusion ive ran into lol.. i cant keep buying hawk pads that dont fit.. i got lucky this time because my friend is going to buy them if they dont fit.. then that means i got dx or si setup.. an i have to figure out from there.. i have alot of friends with ef's so it shouldnt be too hard.

the rotors are all the same size, hf, si whatever. if theres a b series in there, you've got si/dx hubs to fit your axles. any type of caliper will fit on the rotor and bolt on to the bracket. but if you dont get the right pads they won't fit in the bracket. the pads are all the same size, they have notches on the outside that slide into the bracket, thats where the secret is.

when i compare my hf calipers to my Si's i see a notch on both sides of where the pads slide in, the hfs have a simple 3 sided notch, the Si's have the same 3 sided notch with a smaller 3 sided notch in its bracket.

hope this helps.......

it helped a little bit thanks.. if i take the pads out of my car (hf) and they DONT fit in my friends si calipers i have hf.. if they DO fit perfectly in his si calipers does that mean i have si setup? .. never thought it would be this confusion lol..

yes, if your pads dont fit in any known set of si calipers, then you have your original calipers, most likely anyway, there wouldn't be any sense swapping any calipers besides the ones that possibly came equipped on those hubs that were replaced in order to fit the B's axles(some people might be too lazy to undo the brake lines and bleed them after swapping the calipers, or they didn't get the calipers with the hubs).

i have had no confimation but i believe the calipers with the pad difference is only hf's, up until now, i thought it might be the 88 issue, mines an 88. looking at my calipers when i was swapping them, i noticed that the one's that i took off my 88 had a different kind of pivot bolt on the top pivot. to me it looked like it was design for the 88 then they changed it later.

so you haven't looked at the pads yet? you said you ordered pads for 88-89 si/dx have you recieved them yet? if you take the pads off your car and compare with the new ones you can tell.

you should check the part numbers on the 88 hfs and see if they are the same as the 88 si/dx

you said 91 hfs have different numbers than the 91 Si? im guessing the 88's will have different part numbers too, that should make the 88-91 hf pads different than all other 88-91 pads, unless all the 88's use the same pads.

well i have a 91hf, and a friend of mine has a 91si .. he put integra brakes on his crx, i compared my pads to his 91 si pads the si pads have a different pivot to them and are actually longed an wider then the hf pads.. according to advance auto, they have the same rotor part number, i havent got the pads i ordered yet but when i do a friend of mine is going to give me 50 bucks for them to put on his eg (hawk said they'll fit). and my friend with the 91si crx is going to give me his whole rear disc setup, and his 2 front spindles for 80 bucks, so im just going to put si spindles on an the rear disc, with the prop. valve, booster, master cylinder, and stainless steel brake lines.. even tho its still crx brake parts, i think it will be a big difference for me.. along with all hawk pads
