Default muffled pop type sound when trying to start 1990 civic Timing maybe??

My wifes car was acting real sluggish/hesitant when she was driving it and wouldn't start if she hit the gas before trying to start it. Yesterday, it wouldn't start at all, but this morning it started ritght up. I went ahead and changed the fuel filter thinking that it might have been the cause of the problem. Well, apparently it wasn't as she went to the store in it and it was still hesitating alot. When she got home, she turned it off and tried to restart it and now it won't start at all, and has kind of a muffled "poof" sound. Could this be the timing? If not, any help would certainly be appreciated. It is a 1990 Honda Civic LX.
