Default The K20 EF Swap Info Thread (search: k20a k20a2 k24 tsx rsx k-series efk1)

The K20 Swap Info Thread

----------------------------------------------

<u>Preface:</u>

In the past few months so many people were hounding HASport for the K series mounts to be completed (myself included)...

So my question is... where are all the swaps at?

----------------------------------------------

<u>Id like this thread to be a resource for people considering the swap so they can see what they are up against.</u>

Please post any relevant/helpful info and I will edit this post to include it.

<u>Relevant Info Only.</u>

Please Do Not:

~Flame saying how expensive it is and list all the other reasons why you wouldnt do it.

~Flame with how much faster and/or cheaper your B or D setup is. Not here.

~Discuss Pacmans car or how fast a K-EF car would be, itll be quick and have lots of torque on stock internals. Leave it at that, please.

~Discuss the different types of K-motors. Go here for that:
http://www.theksource.com/news...kdown/

~Discuss performance mods, the EP3/RSX and All Motor forums already have 50 threads about Cams, ITB's, Forced Induction anything your heart could desire.

I'm assuming no knowledge of K Series engines and I myself am still learning about these, I do not claim to be an expert.

Feel free to bump it and add more info to it.

-----------------------------------------------

First and foremost, HASport has put together a great PDF document with EF-K swap info, I got a lot of info from here and other forums, so read through this first:

http://www.hasport.com/Tech/installs/efk1.pdf

-----------------------------------------------

GROCERY LIST:

<u>MOUNTS:</u>
HASport K-Series Kit
http://www.hasport.com/Product...1.htm

<u>AXLES:</u>
http://www.raxles.com
OR
http://www.hasport.com (the online store doesn't list them yet, call I suppose)

<u>INTERMEDIATE SHAFT:</u>
RSX/DC5 Shaft

Autozone
Dealer
Ebay
...you get the idea.

<u>HEADER:</u>
Custom HASport
http://hasport.com/catalog/pro...d=123
OR
Modify an RSX Header
(keep in mind cutting a header short affects its performance. try to modify the exhaust to match the header if possible)

<u>HOOD:</u>
A jdm SiR hood will clear with the webbing cut ONLY with the stock intake on the K.

HASport recommends a Fiber Images Carbon Fiber SiR style hood for usdm fronts that dont want to go jdm.

As far as ITB's, or superchargers, they dont fit unless you cut a hole in the hood, however Honda-tech member "bmcrace.com" says they are making hoods for EF's that will clear ITB, k24 superchargers, etc. sounds interesting, heres the web site:
http://www.bmcrace.com/new.html

<u>ECU:</u>
When your swap arrives the ecu will have a Transponder based Immobilizer System which inhibits the vehicle from starting. The slang for this is the "chip in the key". This immobilizer must be removed/bypassed for the engine to start.

Luckly the folks at hondata offer reflashes for K series ecu's, or if you want they will take your core, add extra fuel maps for tuning, datalogging and it even has a USB port. They call it a K-Pro. For pricing and dealer info:

http://www.hondata.com/kpro.html

<u>WIRING:</u>
HASport Conversion Harness (EFWK)

For you DIY guys bear in mind OBD2b to OBD0 is not for the faint of heart. Unless you have a TON of experience, and both a CRX and RSX Helms manual:

http://www.helminc.com/

It might be in your best interest to send out your harness to HASport, or the guys at Rywire or JKobd (both are honda-tech members, good people):

http://www.rywire.com/

http://www.jkobd.com/

<u>GUAGE CLUSTER:</u>
Its mandatory for electronic VSS, so the jdm crx sir cluster would be fine, or newer integra clusters too.

-----------------------------------------------

THE SWAP:

<u>Relocating Brake Proportioning Valve:</u>

You must rotate it 90 degrees away from the shock tower towards the firewall. Watch the brake lines while you're doing this and help them bend without allowing them to crimp. You can take the stock EF bracket and mount it 180 degrees and then bolt it to the firewall.

<u>Removal of Passenger Side Tranny Bracket:</u>

Self explainitory.

I need more help to finish this, Brian if you see this please chime in, or anyone else whos done this swap. I need more pictures and tips for the actual install itself.

It will only help encourage more people to try it if the information is readily available.

-Mike

the new mount is welded underneath the stock battery tray, which you of course have to remove. which is why in the pics of k swapped efs the engine is SO CLOSE to the passenger frame. so the mount moves toward the front. like seen here on the hasport car:

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by CRX4u2NV &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">05 wont work with the mount kit, the tranmission mouting is different or something ( correct me if im wrong) also Hondata hasnt been able to crack the 05 ecu yet.</TD></TR></TABLE>

you are correct, youd have to custom something for the new ones, however you can run the newer cars on the old k-pro, either way, its barely even 05 yet... lol

Good to see a post like this on Honda-tech... seems you copy and pasted some info from k20a.org...

I have no probs with that though

*edit* I just want to mention that the Hasport instructions are very thorough and complete. I have yet to tackle the wiring issue but everything mechanical wise seems pretty straightforward.

Is there anything special that needs to be done when bending or rotating the brake lines? I'd be afraid they'd brake or something.

well everytime you do an alternator on a b16 swapped ef, the best way to get it out is to move the brake booster, and ive gentley bent the lines everytime to get it out, and they are still fine.

you just have to go slow and not pinch them. of course thats a perfect time to go stainless and never worry about it again as well, that info is just if your completely out of money at that point, which most of us would be, and didn't want to spring for SS lines.

you could also loosen the driver side mount....
Jack under the motor....
Pull the bolt out....
slowly let jack down until enough room to pull alt out. No need to **** with the booster valve.....anyway....that's how i'd do it...
