Where exactly did the cable break, do you know? If there's some cable left, maybe dig up under your dash and try to grab hold of it. You probably already tried this, huh?

take the bumper off and pull on the cable with a pair of vice grips

Im not sure the cable even broke. What I think happened is the hood is pinched down too tightly and putting a lot of pressure on the mechinism causing the cable to need a lot of tension to open the hood. The cable under the steering wheel for the hood feels like there is no real tension on it but it does recoil back when pulled which leaves me baffled. I tried having my roommates press the hood down while i used a pair of vise grips to pull the cable but it didnt work. I need to get the hood open because i need to add water to the radiator. you cant take the front bumper off because the hood sits on where the bumper screws are.
Anyway i hope someone can come up with a way for me to open this. My stupid intercooler is in the way of my veiw to the mechinism and its a pain to get off. crap
i hope someone can help.
thanks

get a 1/4 drive socket with a swivle (yeah i dont know how to spell but you get idea) If you can get the hood to open a little you should be able to get to the bolts. I think there are 3 maybe 4 and pull the whole hood latch.

give this a try, if your cable is still connected to the lever.. Have someone pull the lever while you push down on the front of the hood.

This has worked for me several times. My cable used to get really hot coming off the track and it would stretch.

Hood pins fixed that, though.

just have someone pop the hood or stick a screw driver under it with a rag on it not to scratch anything and pry up while you pull the latch.....its prob. just jammed/lost its spring strenght our cars are getting old people.

yeah ive tried some of the things you guys have said. How do you pop it open with a screwdriver from underneath. i can see where the cable goes up but the rest of the view is blocked by my intercooler so ill probably have to take it out, though if possible i want to try and avoid this. any more suggestions guys?
thanks

Same thing happened to me, cable was stretched. I do the good ol' banging on the hood with someone pulling the lever trick and it works every time. Its a royal pain in the *** having to have two people all the time though, so I'm just taking out the mechanism and installing hood pins now.

You can still remove the bumper. Remove the two scews from each side of the bumper; remove bumper turn signals and then remove the 4 total bolts (10mm) that are behind 'em; Remove the two 10 mm bolts on the center underside of the bumper cover... that'll remove the bumper cover and bumper support all in one piece.

Well, if you have an 88-89, you can do what the guy said abotu 4 posts up, and take teh whole front bumper support off. but if you have a 90-91, then you wont be able to get to the screw that holds the corner lense on inside teh engine bay.

I dunno, I have a 90 and I had no problem getting my bumper off with the hood down, I didnt have to touch the corner lights....

had this problem on my 91 crx hf....had to put my hand up into the bumper from underneath...and left it hanging out the hood...and you gotta use paliers to open it..or just go out and get a new one

right behind the front bumper, there is a metal piece that stands vertically. look into your bumper and you will see it. if you follow that piece up to the top of it, there is a little tab you can push to the left. this tab is the one that the hood release cable end is supposed to attach to. in other words, this tab is what the cable pulls on to open the hood. push down on the hood and push that tab and the hood will open. i didnt run the cabl in my 88hf for security reasons, and that is how i opened my hood. if you cant get your hand in behind your bumper, just cut out the grill or something. thats all you have to do, and this is the easiest most practical way to do it.

if all esle fails, i believe you can access the hood cable in the drivers side wheel lining somewhere.

im almost positive the screw on each side of the bumper under the corner lense only screws intot he bumper support....if you remove the bumper and bumper suport at the same time then this wont even matter..now will the screws under the hood...all you need to unscrew is the 2 screws on each side of the bumper int he wheel well and the 4 big bolts behidn the bumper lenses that hold the bumper support on...
