How-To: Install Motor By Yourself
This is a quick cliff notes, common sense should fill in the rest of the gaps.
STEP ONE
First, assemble the motor you want to install and when it is ready to go in, tilt it sideways toward the crank pulley and if you are a good at it the motor will balance temporarily. Do not take your hands off at any time as I will not be responsible if you drop the motor . Next take your creeper, furniture cart, whatever and put it under the motor. Lower motor onto cart and move onto step 2.
STEP TWO
Fully raise car so motor will clear front bumper, radiator supports. I had to remove my driver side tow hook to clear.
STEP THREE
Lower car around the motor, stop to make adjustments to the motor's position and as well it helps to have a pry bar with you. FYI, you want to get the driver's side mount on first and the easiest way to do this is to remove the mount from the bracket and install the mount first, then as the motor is moving up you can drive the stud through the mount and put the nut on, then shimmy motor into position to allow you to put in the corresponding bolt that connects the driver's side mount into the bracket.
STEP FOUR
Now that you have the driver's side mount in, argue with the passenger side mount profusely. Odds are you won't be able to get it in without help of the rear mount/bracket so here is what you do next. Raise one side of the car back out and remove your jack. Replace with jackstand. Now take your jack and slide it under the transmission and start playing with different positions that will allow you to put a bolt through the bracket and into the tranmission case. Once you thread the rear two, hit them with your favorite impact gun to align them and insert the third of the three bolts, the one closest to the starter. Once you have the rear mount in you can just lower the car/raise the car and with your prybar talk the passenger mount into going into position. Keep the bolt handy to be ready to thread it a moments notice, impact guns help as well.
STEP FIVE
Step back and enjoy your work. Time for completion, 30 minutes.

i've tried with a b motor sucked major nuts. the rear mount is just a bitch and not to mention the front cross member i would recommend a cherry picker for sure, I got everything lined up but the intake mani and the front cross member was a bitch so i just got a cherry picker

I helped out a buddy one time using this method. We were pretty much forced to, as the car was in a garage with a driveway that sloped downward towards the garage. There was no clearance for a hoist/cherry picker with the limited space.
I will say it was a little scary, we didn't lift the chassis very saftely. We ended up using two Civic spare tire jacks on top of a stack of 2x4s.

Man I remember when I did this. I was lucky and had a friends car jack and my 3 ton suv jack. It was still a bitch to get right.
Removing the front cross member gives you so much more room. I think I'd prefer this way as opposed to the top just because you don't have to worry about banging anything up.

i've swapped motors using both a cherry picker and by jacking the car way up in the air. i have to say that buying the cherry picker was one of my best investments. but to each his own. good write up.

I found a cherry picker for $50 on craigslist . You can also get one for $130 at Northern Hydrolics, my favorite store ever.
Their not that expensive, just gotta find one. Unless you dont have room.
